Members gt_jumper
Cheap (say $200au - $500au) must be a pair, or would a nice set of mixing headphones do the job? Recommendations?
Members Jesse G
Mixing on headphones is generally a no-no in production-land, as frequency reproduction and spacial representation is pretty inaccurate. Nice tracking headphones are always great to have though for recording. As far as which monitors to get, here's a bump for your troubles, because I was about to post the same thread. Members tele62
that's a low budget, but if money is tight these do the job really very well for 200AU: http://bavasmusic.com.au/store/maudio-studiophile-p-3975.html At the top end of your budget I'd go with: http://www.storedj.com.au/products/product.php?id=370&utm_source=MyShopping&utm_medium=CPC&utm_campaign=MyShopping or http://www.turramusic.com.au/Pages/CatalogueItem.aspx?CIID=
Members newholland
i'll make my standard recommendation of mackie mr5s. krks are too woofy, maudios are too woofy and too bright, i don't trust behringers build quality-- but can't speak to their sound, and i don't like yamaha hs 50s. i prefer the mr5's over the mr8's and the newer 824s too. but if you can hold out... yamaha hs80s. Members NixerX
I use Krk's and they are fine especially at the price.
Members Rear Naked
FYI, make sure to use a sub! I use one that came with my computer speaker set. Its really hard to get the bass right without one.
Members satannica
Consider the size of your room; the speaker size is imported. In a 200x220 room, I found even 6" drivers weren't giving me a good reproduction and had to go to 5". I didnt like the MR5s I had and went with the KRK RP5s in the end. Members jenksdrummer
I went after M-Audio BX8a's - they are oversized for what I need, but they have good response and are pretty "tight" sounding. I have to remember this, because when I get bass sounding normal on the BX8a's, it'll be thunderous on "average" speakers. The best monitors are the ones you use all the time...I tend to do pretty well with my Creative-Labs 5.1 setup (which I'm only using 2.1) - I've had it for years and know their sound - but, when it comes to top end and hearing clarity (lack of, mostly), BX8a's are better for that... Members gt_jumper
Thanks guys I must say those $200au M-audio monitors caught my eye due to price. How much better would these monitors be then my iMAC speakers or the $40 ipod dock speakers i have been mixing with?
