  • Poll- Pickup rings or direct mount?

So I got a really good condition Ibanez rg off Craigslist for $100 solely for a massive rebuild project. Here is what I plan to do

strip and paint body/neck white (thin lacquer)
stain neck to look like ebony
    replace tuners/nut with black
overhaul trem with a new one with a custom machined titanium plate and posts(I can do that at my job)
    new electronics/pickups etc

It is a good guitar in good shape and I just wanted a new project. My dilemma is should I use black pickup rings or mount the pups directly to the body?

What do you think would look better and is there any advantage/disadvantage to either method?

I want direct mount on all my guitars. I have an RG that has rings and it tears me up inside. That, to me, is the only downfall of those old RGs. Direct mount FTW.

pay a couple grand and get a Gibson

Either way... MIGHT sound and play good.

DM looks better, but rings are more practical. I've seen far too many nightmare stories of people having problems with certain pups and DM.

yea, I'm leaning heavily towards direct mount.

Directmount is my preference for feel, but to be honest it's psychological, because if I owned a jazzbox (175 style ) or an LP, I'd definitely want it to have them.
              Currently using:
Ibanez RG1570 (DiMarzio MegaDrive bridge) - Peavey Royal 8
              Board:
              RMC Wizard Wah (2005)
              EHX Small Stone (Big box)
Boss SD-1 (Modded by PedalMods UK, 3-way gain voicing selection)
              Ernie Ball VP-JR
              Boss DD-3 (1987)
              T-Rex Fuel Tank Jr.

Almost any guitar will always look better with direct mount pickups. My dream ibanez would be black with body binding and direct mount pickups.

Why don't you use kisekae to get a preview of both?
