I do aspire to do some composing, but I'm not looking to be Rick Wakeman. Budget is $500 max. There's about a billion options out there and I'm a little overwhelmed by choices. I have an Ozone and it works great. Get something with knobs if you want for more tweaking fun. You could also get any old synth with midi and use that as a controller with a midi interface.
