Sand, sand, sand, sand, and then when you're done with that, sand. After that, clean it off real well, spray away. If you have the buffing tools, I guess you could wet sand with some super, super fine grit and buff it out after. I've gotten some decent finishes out of just spray can finishes. He's a gemologist/jewelry designer that really never gets his hands dirty. He's looking for someone he can send the body to and do a decent job.
