Marshall Silver Jubilee EFX Loop signal is putting out too hot a signal ( I THINK )

I was wondering if anyone else has this problem. I have a Marshall 2550 (silver jubilee) and if I put my delay pedal (line 6 DL4) into the loop. The volume drops quite a bit when I engage the pedal, especially if the distortion of the amp is on. What I'm thinking is that the send of my efx loop is just hitting the pedal too hard. I'm wondering if I could or should put some kind of pad in the loop to bring the signal level down a bit. Or even a signal buffer pedal to go from high to low impedance. I've seen efx loop level pots on other amps and I was wondering if this is done to solve the same issue.

Any thoughts

You could put a buffer or pad into the loop. This can be as simple as a BOSS EQ pedal, which can take a pretty hot signal coming in, and allows you to precisely control the output level so that it doesn't kick your Line 6 pedal too hard.

Or, you could either change the resistor or put in a pot to adjust your own FX loop send level. It's a pretty simple, straightforward mod.

Think I can kill 2 birds with one post here.:thu:

The fX loop on the Silver Jubilee runs at a fixed -10db, and is unadjustable. this is fine for rack effects, but pedals need a +4 (which is available on later marshalls) or you will lose volume.

The fx loop on the Slash AFD heads are adjustable via the "return level" knob on the back of the head and go between zero and +10db.

i believe the old Slash heads (not the AFD) also have the fixed -10db series effects loop with no adjustment

Ah ok, cause all i'm running in my rack is a Line 6 G90 Wireless, Rocktron Guitar Silencer, KORG DTR-1000 Tuner and a furman for power.

This is backwards. Pedals run at -10db, rack run a +4db.

But again, the issue on this thread is a DL4 issue, the pedal needs to be modded to run in any series loop.

Your right Billy, but then math was never my strong suit.

However, I have noticed that I get better results running my loop at +4 with pedals than at -10.

I actually know about the issue with the pedal, I should have mentioned that I had it modded last summer. The volume drops less than it used to but it is still really noticeable when I'm using my amps distortion. I'll check the pedal again on some friends amps when I get a day off to see if it's happening on those amps too.

It's interesting that you're finding it better to push +4 dB to your pedals. I could put my clean boost pedal in my efx loop in front of my DL4 and see what happens. After that I guess my options seem to be putting a pot into the efx loop or opening up my pedal and making sure the correct mod was done to the output. Either way I have a feeling the smell of melting solder will be in my near future.

On another note I just picked up a Malekko Ultra 213, what an awesome fuzz pedal.
