  • What is the Duncan Custom/Custom 7 like?

I am thinking of snagging one up for the bridge in a basswood Ibanez RG7. I like tight low end, lots of clarity and high end, and tons of pick attack.

Compared to the JB (which was in the guitar I swapped it to), I'd say more low middy, less nasal high mids, clearer sounding due to lower output, not super bright. This was quite a long time ago so don't quote me on that.

I pulled a Custom Custom out of my LP.
It was kinda meh/"flattish" to my ears.
I prefer p/ups with a little more 'tude...

Custom Custom is great in a bright sound guitar. Works great with alder/maple neck guitars

The regular custom, which is ceramic magnet is pretty tight in the lows, nice mids and definitely possesses pick attack and treble.. On a 7 string I haven't tried it, but it's prolly my favorite all around Duncan, because you can simply swap magnets and get many different sounds..

Are you asking about the Custom Custom or the Custom 7? Alnico 2 versus Ceramic so big difference.

It's my favorite pickup. Very mean sounding, not as middy as a JB, fairly bright (but not piercing) amazing clarity and super tight. I didn't care for the custom custom.

yep, that sounds like the Custom. Go for it.

Everything the OP stated he wants points to the distortion more than the custom, but don't listen to me.

Let us know what you think once you get it installed, I bet it will sound good.

Didn't care for the Custom in my LP. It sounded kinda one dimensional and generic. I say one dimensional because the mids were kinda congested and flat sounding. I think it would have sounded better in a maple necked strat.

I prefer the Distortion. It works in any type of guitar IMO.

I love the Custom in alder...that's what I have in my custom 7-string. I've never tried it in basswood, though. Awesome pickup, though! Very tight and clear, but not thin at all.
