So, just 2 years ago I bought the finest laptop that Dell could produce. Every bell and whistle available. It now seems like a huge, tired dinosaur. I'll have some holiday cash from gifts/bonuses and thinking maybe an iPad 4. But I know damn near nothing about them. Help with the following if you can. Thanks!

Are you using an iPad4 or some version of an iPad these days?

Has it completely replaced your desktop/laptop?

Was that the idea behind an iPad, to replace desktops and laptops?

If you have one, do you still need to consistently access your PC for other things?

Can I use an external hard drive with an iPad for storage?

I'm not seeing a USB, so....

What are must have accessories? Case, cover, stand? I'm not worried about apps yet.

What exactly is the benefit of a "cellular" version?

Does anyone use an iPad plugged into a larger VGA screen? Is this easy/common?

Is the external keyboard a necessity?

Looks like it'll run around $700.00 Worth it???

Damn, there's a million other questions, but anyway.

Any input is appreciated.

What are you going to be using it for?

Are you using an iPad4 or some version of an iPad these days? - Yes

Has it completely replaced your desktop/laptop? - Not completely, but a great deal, yes

Was that the idea behind an iPad, to replace desktops and laptops? - I don't think so, no

If you have one, do you still need to consistently access your PC for other things? - Yes

Can I use an external hard drive with an iPad for storage? - Not that I know of, but you get iCloud

I'm not seeing a USB, so.... - So what?

What are must have accessories? Case, cover, stand? I'm not worried about apps yet. - Must have? None. Case/stand is a good idea

What exactly is the benefit of a "cellular" version? - You can access data wherever cell coverage is, not just wifi

Does anyone use an iPad plugged into a larger VGA screen? Is this easy/common? - Yes, easy: yes, common: not really

Is the external keyboard a necessity? - No

Looks like it'll run around $700.00 Worth it??? - Not if you just get a used older one

I've got an iPad 1. Got it for my birthday when they first came out. I'm typing on it now.

I don't think it will replace your desktop (I still use mine to rip CDs, put them on my iPad, and to record music) but for 99% of your day to day web related activities, it will be more than sufficient.

There is actually a 4th gen iPad.

Not really any different from the 3rd gen.

???? i am very confused then. Every time a new ipad or iphone is released it's some major story that everyone is raving about and I see ads plastered all over. I never heard of any release for an ipad 4, and i am pretty up-to-date on tech stuff as i manage promotions and advertisements for the worlds largest consumer electronics retailer.

Are you using an iPad4 or some version of an iPad these days? yes, just got the ipad 3 with 32gb

Has it completely replaced your desktop/laptop?

not even close

Was that the idea behind an iPad, to replace desktops and laptops?

nope, got it for obnoxiously cheap and thought it would be good to replace sheet music

If you have one, do you still need to consistently access your PC for other things?

yes, although if i just surfed teh web i could probably get by. i have used the google online word processor to edit some papers so it is possible (although a little cumbersome). i have a 27" imac so you can't watch porn in one window and surf the web in another.

Can I use an external hard drive with an iPad for storage?

don't know, no usb port but i'm sure someone has a HD with the apple connector

I'm not seeing a USB, so....

i haven't gotten anything yet but i'll probably get a cover and a guitar rig/apogee jam type of input

What exactly is the benefit of a "cellular" version?

you have to pay monthly but you can access the internet anywhere a cell phone can. i just have the wifi because i dont use it very much

Does anyone use an iPad plugged into a larger VGA screen? Is this easy/common?

no idea

Is the external keyboard a necessity?

if it'll be your only computer

Looks like it'll run around $700.00 Worth it???

no way. i got mine obnoxiously cheap and my girlfriend wants to buy it so im highly considering it at $300. so it's worth right on the edge of $300 to me personally. i'd probably spend the a little more and get a decent laptop. also, learn how to use a PC because my GF spent $1500 on a laptop and 2 years later it's also running super slow. i have a {censored}ty netbook thats the same age and it runs just as well because i do porper maintenance

iPad4 = iPad 3 + retina display + upgraded processor.

Worth the money if you think it's worth the money
:idk:

iPad 3 actually has the retina display too...I'm typing on it now.

the iPad 3 was the first iPad to be labeled "The New iPad with Retina display"...it had processor and memory upgrades from the iPad 2. The iPad 4 is almost the same thing, with a different processor than the 3, and the new dock connector...These were released about 6 months apart.

The iPad 4 came out at the same time as the iPad Mini

The performance of the "iPad4" is like night and day compared to the original version (iPad3='The New iPad"='Retina iPad")...processor upgrade is well worth it.

I had an ipad 1 and now have ipad 2. I see no need for the new gen ipad as its thicker which annoyed me with the ipad 1 and its more heavy than ipad 2. Ipad 1 was too heavy so ipad 2 to me is the one to go for. I don't think retina display is worth it over these factors.

New ones are faster but there has not been a single time I have thought "god this is slow". I will upgrade when they are as light and as thin as the 2.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 3 like a couple millimeters thicker than the 2? freak.gif I had a 2, and I haven't noticed the thickness or weight being a problem between the 2 and 3... freak.gif

I have an iPad 2 and the only reason I use my desktop computer at home is for gaming these days. For everything else I use my iPad. This includes recording and music creation.

There are tons of music-related apps for the iOS and they are dirt cheap compared to full-blown PC software. There are just lots of apps in general that are stellar.

Unless you just use your regular computer for email and web browsing, you are going to be sorely disappointed if you try to replace it with an iPad. They are two completely different tools for completely different things. If you really want a tablet that can replace a desktop, I would check out the Microsoft Surface Pro (not the normal Surface) when it's available.
