I'm just throwing this out there to see what each of you would do, in terms of preamp tube placement, in a DSL50, if these were the tubes you had available.

1 - Ruby 12ax7ac5 hg
1 - JJ ecc82
1 - Peavey 12ax7 Super 7
1 - Groove Tubes 7025
1 - Jan 12at7wc
2 - JJ ecc83 hg
1 - JJ ecc83s
3 - Groove Tubes 12ax7c
1 - Marshall VLVE-00040
1 - Sovtek LPS
1 - Tungsol 12ax7

We are assuming that all tubes are ok and not on their last legs?!
DSL's can get a bit fizzy but a good combo of tubes can make the difference.

v1-Sovtek lps -nice full range
v2-Marshall vlve- get that marshall crunch
v3-GT 7025-also full range gain
v4-Ruby 12ax7- nice tone if its a red one

I dont care for tungsols in DSL's ( makes them even more fizzy).

Pretty much this. I don't have a huge stash of tubes laying around, but I have a few. Every time I've done a comparison, I can't tell the damn difference.

stick to the 12ax7/ecc83's. don't put the 12at7 or ecc82's in there. why don't you just try different combinations out and see for yourself what you like?

Also, I've noticed a HUGE interplay between tubes and speakers. It's a phenomena that never ceases to trip me out... but it's more prevalent with different power tubes and speakers. I usually prefer 6L6's in my GH50L but I recently got celestion CL80 clones and on a whim i put KT77's in it and was very pleasantly surprised. I've tried KT77's in that amp with like 4 other pairs of speakers and hated them. Tripped me out that they sound REALLY good now.
