Members butterguitar
Over the past month or so, I have been really creaming over EVH's tone on Balance, I keep thinking, that cannot be a 5150 amp, it sounds way too smooth. To my ears anyway, it sounds like he was still using the SLO, much like on the F.U.C.K album. However, he endoursed the amp at the time, he has fullstacks of the 5150 amp and cab on stage, you'd think he would use them. But the sound live, and on the album does not sound anything like a 5150 {IMO} Now obviously for Van Halen III, the tour with Sammy Hagar in 2004, and the present tour, his tone sounds more like a buzzsaw, similar to the 5150 lol. Maybe now he uses his 5153 (5150) amps exclusively. I hate false advertisement.
Members ComingApart
I don't know that he ever used the stock 5150 heads. The ones he used were alot closer to the 5150 combo's which sound significantly different. AFAIK anyway. No actual idea on what he used on that album, I always thought it sounded pretty processed. Members the_gunslinger
I know at one point he had Bogner fix/soup up maybe his Marshall and he recorded with that on some stuff, I think.

Members ShaneV2
Two wet cabs with Eventide detune and some delay can also do a lot to smooth out any amp fwiw.
Members Rampage
He used a Soldano SLO which is the same thing, just more expensive.

Members soundgardener75
The question really is: Does EVH record with the variac?

Members soundgardener75
Probably not in over 20 years. Supposedly he still does live. I've always just wondered if it's possible to record with that on, wouldn't that pick up a lot of white noise?
Members Rampage
In all seriousness, how close are they? Definitely different. The SLO is a much better amp.

Members Rydock
No, but I heard that he put reflectors on the back of his guitar.
Members the_gunslinger
So jet city=closer? From what I've gathered over the many Jet City threads, I think the JCA is closer to a Soldano Hot Rod vs a SLO
Members Rampage
So jet city=closer? Not sure, I've never played a Jet City. That said, I think the SLO is kind of its own thing. The Jet City is more like the old Soldano Hot Rod amps, for what I have heard.

Members primeholy
Hmmm. Dont know if I could ever own a SLO and Mrak V at the same time. Hmmmm. Maybe....IDK:cry:
Members ShaneV2
Actually, I've always thought the reflectors could lead to uncomfortable pinching or chafing when playing shirtless. That's not safe at all!
