...but whenever I see pictures of a (relatively unknown) band I've not heard yet (like a local band from another city) and I see them playing strats, I assume they're awful. Like high school talent show through a gorilla awful.

Yet, if I see them playing telecasters, I assume they have their **************** together.

I feel the same way about Epiphone SGs and LPs. Epi SG, I brace for suck. Epi LP, and I'm like "Oh, well, certainly they'd have a Gibson LP if they had the money. Wonder how they sound?"

well, duh. But nothing that I'm consciously aware of. I mean, I don't like strats, but I recognize that they (for the most part) are well made instruments and the vast majority of non-beginner players of them make them sound awesome.

I mean, I could see a picture of a band and their guitarist could be playing a custom shop strat, and I'd still think his band would suck.

It's funny Strats have fallen so out of favor. I blame it on the fact most people's first guitar is some cheap Squier. They're the workhorse of guitars.

How about when you watch the opening band set up and the guitarist pulls out an Epi LP and his Marshall MG? Every single one of us is thinking, "This is going to be terrible."

Cheap, pointy guitar and line 6, and I get skeered.

This works both ways. If I see a dude with a **************** ton of expensive gear in road cases that look new, I'm thinking, "this guy is either a poser or a total pro."

I hit a lot of blues jams here in LA when I first moved to town. Strats outnumbered all other guitars by, like, 5 to 1. I asked one host, a really good player too, why everyone had a Strat. "They're cheap and easy to find" was his answer. Makes sense.

And there is always this one too: If I see a guy roll up with a bunch of vintage gear, my first reaction is he probably knows what he's doing.

yeah when I see someone setting up with a stock strat I assume the heavy tones will be kinda lacking with the single coils... and I am usually right. HSS strats are a different story though.

                              But yeah, Epiphones = noobs.
