  • HN(U)AD to me

Back in 1990, I found an old Magnatone lap steel in a pawn shop in Bayard, NM. Paid $45, with original chipboard case, cable and steel. The classic pearloid bakelite [MOTS], with a less often seen white 'fingerboard'; I used it for a lot of gigs, recording sessions, etc., but due to its age, the tuner buttons are literally turning to dust. So I retired it a few years ago.
But my amp tech at the time had a 'matched set', lap steel and amplifier, and it just triggered a strange desire in me. So for close to a quarter of a century, I have been looking for a matching amp. They would surface occasionally, but would either be damaged beyond use, over priced, or sold before I could bid.
Last Saturday I stumbled on a late 1940s model, in working order, for auction at Reverb.com. I knew exactly what I wanted to pay for it, and so I joined the auction. keeping my bid on top. Someone tried to snipe me at one minute to close, but I aced it, just under my desired price point. It arrived today, got plugged in and...well, I don't want to plug the lap into it yet, but the Stratocaster sounded great through it. Will post pics later.

Later this week, I will take it all apart and inspect the sockets, tubes, wiring and speaker...

addenda: I couldn't wait. Opened it up yesterday. Transformer has been replaced, [and not a pro job, IMHO]...tubes were not seated completely. 65 years worth of dust...and a 3/4" tear in the speaker cone, which I repaired. Power tube looks like it is not 'really happy'...will need to find a NOS replacement. Will be retesting later today after the glue is fully cured on the cone....

retested and much improved. Pulling and re-seating all the tubes definitely made a difference, as did the speaker tear repair.

Looking at the photo, the word "cheesy" comes to mind. Not that it's a bad thing!
