  • OT: Rare sports facts wanted again

This guy at my job wants to know some stuff again. So we come here to ask you people, you always have answers for our question. OK, they're his questions, I don't know **************** about sports.

Anyway, why don't Baltimore, Cleveland, Cincinatti, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Quebec, Huoston, Fort Worth, Saint Paul, Oakland and Winnipeg have teams in the NHL? His quess is that they have teams in AHL. Is that true?

Hockey isn't really that big in the USA. It is the least appreciated major sport. Milwaukee has an AHL team called the Admirals. Quebec and Winnipeg used to have NHL teams, the Quebec Nordiques and the Winnipeg Jets but due to lack of fan support they moved the franchises to other cities. Fort Worth and St. Paul have teams. Dallas/Fort Worth and Minneapolis/St. Paul are basically the same thing. The Dallas team is the Stars who were formerly the Minnesota North Stars (who by the way will always suck donkey balls in my book, screw them!) and the new franchise in Minnesota is called the Wild. I love hockey.

Terje, thanks for the thread. About 10 minutes after I posted this I got a call from an old friend and we spent about 20 minutes talking about hockey.

A team really won't get a franchise unless they have a large enough TV market to support the team. TV ad revenues are pretty much what support a franchise team these days, which is why the boards of arenas are plastered with corporate logos and all the arenas have company names (such as the Pepsi Center in Colorado).
