  • Re the Townsend thing...

I just can't (or don't wanna) believe it...the guy is more than a songwriter; he's been a kind of twisted role model for lots of rockers over three generations.

Really, really, I hope that his "research for my autobiography" claim is the truth.

Funny enough, lately I've been listening to the remastered "Live at Leeds" just by pure coincidence. Surely one of the greatest live Rock and Roll recordings of all time, and Pete is at his peak.

I think we'd all like to believe him, but it just seems a little too suspicious. I'll keep an open mind about it, but child exploitation is something that I personally can't tolerate very well.

I mean these instances happen, you know? Call me naive, but I never suspected that priests would be molesting children and they are supposed to be the ultimate roll models. But it happened.

He says that he's against child porn, but he gives them money by paying to see child porn. He says he "may have been" abused and was doing research. You dont research your own child abuse by looking at nude defensless children on a pay site. I'm sorry, but he creeps me out.
      I don't feel tardy!

Too bad, but apparently true. I think that the percentage of abused children that have this kind of problem as adults is very high.

I only hope that he can get straightened out and that he makes it through this.

To me he was the guy in rock and roll that PROVED that what you looked like didn't matter if you had that kind of talent.

If you have a person you admire or a friend become a "mental patient" it changes the relationship dramatically.

He'll just never seem the same to me.

Still one of the primary driving forces behind "smart" rock, and nothing can change that.

          HAHAHAHA ! ! !

He was ugliest FIRST ! ! ! The Stones didn't look half bad in 1965, but the "Nose on a Stick", to use Daltry's description has been plug ugly his whole life.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Well whatever happens, Pete will always be a big influence on my playing and performance and he is one of the most talented songwriters in rock. I saw them in August and they still had the goods.

Townsend said that he informed Scotland yard of what he was doing. If that checks out, then the rest of his story is most likely also true. I hope it does, and he's proven innocent.

There's another aspect of this case that troubles me. Townsend was not accused of molesting anybody, he was arrested for looking at pictures. As reprehensable as kiddie porn is, I don't like the idea of a government telling people what they can and can't look at or read. It's a very short step from busting people for kiddie porn to busting people for reading such "subversive" literature as Catcher In The Rye and Huckleberry Finn.

Agreed, I don't care if Townsend looked at pictures of anything. What I do care about are governing bodies monitering what you watch, look at, inhale, think etc. and then arresting you for it.
It's also none of my business. But the media has made sure that I know one tiny aspect of the man's life, however disgusting, and he now shall forever be judged by it. Because he looked at pictures on the internet.
I'm not trying to debate child pornography. It's civil liberties that concern me.
That we have to actually fear having porn of any kind on our home computers is ridiculous. What my sexual preferences might be are my business and no one elses. And as long as I am not hurting anyone, who cares what I do?
Paying for pictures of child pornography enters that grey area. You are then part of the financial incentive to produce child pornography. Which, no doubt, leads to the molestation, rape and abuse of children on some level by those willing to take advantage of the market.
The only solution I can offer is to actively seek out and prosecute those who engage in the production of child pornography.
If you value your freedom you should be somewhat concerned about governments that would be willing to incarcerate you for images that your eyes have seen.

Pete's story rings true. From his lyrics, to interviews, to musings he has posted, it appears that he probably was abused as a child. He is a victim. We all know that abusers were often abused themselves, and just continue the cycle. There is a psychological defect that occurs wherein the victim must relive the abuse. The unfortunate reality is that the slimeballs we want to lock up and torture are victims themselves, and are dealing with it in a disfunctional manner because they never received proper treatment. Pete may very well have been working through his own deep-seated issues through this "research." Hopefully this case will shed light on the pedophilia and allow society to evolve to a more enlightened view of abuse, its causes, and how to stop it.
