  • So, here's the thing.........

Last night at practice, a couple of my bandmates brought up an upcoming BotB they want to play. I've never been a fan of the whole pay to play thing in any format. There's a $50 entry fee to play three songs, one of which must be an original. We're a country/classic rock cover band and have made no effort toward original music. Almost as a lark, we cobbled together a collaborative effort and came up with what seems to be a fairly promising tune. I thought I had pretty much left the original music thing behind 25 years ago, but I found my enthusiasm building as it came together. Still, it seems to be fairly ridiculous to be playing a BotB at 50. I don't mind doing it once since they were pretty excited about it. But what has been lurking in my mind since last night is the urge to get back to writing and maybe get into the studio this winter if we can come up with enough quality material. So.....is it slightly nuts to be thinking about moving that direction after so long? Or should I encourage them to take a shot at it and to hell with the detractors and nay-sayers? What say the denizens of CJ?

writing is separate from gigging, and the two are not mutually exclusive. And although I have almost always played in cover bands (after 1974), nearly all have included original material in their repertoires....and why not? A good song is a good song.

I am currently working on a couple of pieces, which, at the rate my band rehearses, will not get recorded for another year or two.

paying $50 to play 3 songs, however, seems like the only winner in that BotB will be the organizers.

Most BotB competition shows have some free recording time in XXX studio attached to them. If youre getting the urge to write original material because of this, then I say jump on it. :thu:
Bring your fan support though! You can bet the bands that want to win it will!

That's pretty much my take on it. This is part of a neighboring town's annual festival. Last year, they had an attached music festival with Uncle Kracker as the headliner and about 7-8 other bands. I suspect they reviewed their budget this year and came up with a fairly clever way to reduce expenses and still draw a good crowd for the event. As far as I know, there is no studio time involved with this. The winner gets $1000. Judging is done by three judges, two teen judges and the crowd. Whichever bunch of local kids brings the most, loudest supporters will undoubtedly win. I'm not so much concerned with winning as getting the folks in our target demographic interested enough to come to the local venues to hear more. There's also a part of me that wants to see if the original piece will fly and if more will be forthcoming. I'm willing to put up with the BS of the BotB once to get that kickstarted.

              A few bells rang:
'neighboring town': How far away is it? Getting new 'fans' there may not help you...
'most, loudest supporters': Getting 'your crowd' there to cheer you on may be an issue,
'The winner gets $1000': this will bring out every crap band for four counties...I'm jus'sayin'...you will be hearing a bunch of bad music...before you guys get on to win it.
'two teen judges': you are dead meat.

Still, why not just use the new original during your regular gigs and see how it goes over?

                1. It's about 12-13 miles towards a larger town that we routinely play in. Possibly pulling some of those folks to the bigger venues in Florence is one of the few potential positives.

                2. We'll have a decent amount of support, I think. Squalling hordes of teens are not our usual draw, though. I think some of our younger members will have to learn how much it's about BS as opposed to music. I'm not trying to rain on their parade, besides, the day will come when I'll be the one asking for a favor.

                3. I hope not, but you're probably right. I'm hoping to play early and let the guys who wanted to do this stay for the remainder.

                4. Yup. Only hope here is that they're male and are suitably impressed by our 20s female vocalist.

After it's tweaked a bit, this piece will go into the setlist regardless. I think it will merit being there on its own.:thu:

Why not? It's not that much cash, and it seems like you could attract many young fans.

It's not the money so much as being a cranky old fart who opposes pay to play in any format. Four of six voted to do it, so I'll go along without a lot of grumbling. I have enjoyed getting back into writing again, so I suppose it's worth it.

well, $50 / 6 is less than ten bucks apiece...or make the 4 who want to do it pay $12.50 each for the privilege...
are they at least comping the bar tab?

One would hope so, but I'm not holding my breath. They're promoting the "Family Friendly" aspect to the point where lyric sheets, including the covers, must be submitted in advance. I don't know if they'll have on site alcohol sales or not.
