  • Clean boost?

What, if anything are you guys/gals using for a solo boost? I prefer to run p'ups wide open, so rolling the volume knob is not my first choice. I'm thinking about trying the Boss GE-7 with the sniper mod. What I'd like to accomplish is boosting any of my basic guitar sounds to lead volume by roughly the same margin regardless of which sound (clean, crunch, distortion) I may be using at the time. What have you had success with?

For years I relied on the Morley VBO pedal. Not only a great volume pedal (electro-optical, no pots), but it has a circuit with a control knob (unfortunately awkwardly located on the side) and an on/off stomp switch....gave a max 40dB signal boost. It is one of the few devices I regret letting go of when I decided to go straight to the amp (the other was my original Phase 90). The drawback was the huge footprint...I was always tempted to but a trashed one and re-box the booster into a single stompbox....I wish Morley had. I actually was thinking that it could even be 'pre-staged' so you could dial in a max, and then have more that one sub-incremental switch so it didn't have to go all the way to max (which was why the pedal itself was so cool).

THAT would be the thing. If you could assign values to, say, three switches in something the size of a basic amp footswitch.

Digitech Bad Monkey, keep the gain down.

I use a Zendrive 1 to just give me a clean bump, then into a Zendrive 2 for gain. I also have a boost footswitch that works on each channel of my amp, so I've got lots of options.

I've been trying something similar with a turbo tube screamer, but the disparity between clean and distorted boost levels makes it an either/or proposition. If I crank it enough to make a noticeable difference in the gain channel, it will just rip your head off on the clean side. I'd like to replace that with one pedal that will give me a similar boost on both channels.

What I do is simple. I set the gain up on an eq box, and away I go. Maybe that is too simple for some....?

assuming you have an eq box handy...with a gain control that you can stomp...

For the price of some of those pedals, you could get a second amp.
