      one that was already broken....

        I'm glad you asked. D
There's a trick to it all.

My wife can do it... it's all about the frequency of resonance of the glass - hit it with the same pitch with enough amplitude, and the glass will break. You need two things to pull it off - good pitch control, and a loud, powerful voice.

A thin leaded crystal wine glass is the type of glass you want to use.

They say that if you strike the glass with a spoon, it will ring at the required pitch. You may have to sense the fundamental frequency.

                Thanks Phil
But there are so many types of crystal wine glass‚Äčes out there, what type did your wife use. was it a small type or a large gin and tonic size one?

The size of the glass will effect its resonant frequency. The smaller and thinner the glass, the higher the resonant frequency, and thus the higher the pitch you'll need to produce.

Larger glasses are not without their own issues. While a larger glass will have a lower resonant frequency (all other things being equal) than a smaller glass, you'll need greater amplitude to get the increased mass of the larger glass to sympathetically resonate and then shatter. And remember, you're looking for 100dB SPL or hotter under the best of circumstances, which is pretty darned loud.

I just asked her about it and she even shattered glass with her voice once when she wasn't trying to do it - there was a glass candle-holder about three or four inches in diameter and about eight inches tall on the piano, and she was practicing, and shattered it without intending to. That's what she gets for singing a song with the wrong note in a fortissimo section I guess. Oops.

You have to find a glass in the right resonant frequency range that will work for your voice. My wife is a former RCA recording artist and she had a good 4 octave range in her prime, and tons of power across most of that range - but also extremely importantly, she has the ability to zero in on that resonant frequency like a laser - that expert pitch control along with the high amplitude (volume) is vital if you want to shatter glass with your voice.
