What happened to my voice?

So over the past 5 or 6 months I've been singing in what I thought was a comfortable register a few times a week, practicing and attending an open mic each week in a tone and range similar to the first part of the clip above. One day I go to sing like I normally do and the sound comes out much like the latter end of the clip. It is uncomfortable, not necessarily painful, and I can talk fine in my speaking voice which is a bit of a lower register. It does hurt to yawn however.

My question is what happened to my voice and what can I do to aid it? Is this something that will resolve and heal in time, as my other singing friends have stated? I am 25, and do not smoke at all. I exercise a few times a week and try to live a healthy-ish lifestyle.

I've been drinking a lot of water and lemongrass+ginger or green tea with honey as I've been recommended to do by friends. I'd appreciate further insight!

From I can hear in your clip, it sounds like something is preventing you from getting a clean closure at your vocal cords. It can happen for many reasons, but one of the most common causes is vocal overuse/abuse resulting in swollen vocal cords due to singing too loud or trying too hard to push out higher notes. If its due to swelling, then it may subside over time if you give your voice some time to rest. But if it's due to vocal cysts or nodules then the issue may be more difficult to deal with. I would recommend seeing a good otolaryngologist or ENT specialist just to be sure.

All the best
