Members Bluesfortheredsun
Hi all, Can somebody tell me what you call this vocal technique? I believe it's quite common in country music but I don't listen to much so I don't have any better examples than Loretta Lynn/Conway Twitty Louisiana Woman/Mississippi Man - .Loretta Lynn does each time she starts the line "Too much love in this Louisiana heart" (first appears at 0.20). It's the sort of high bit right at the beginning of when she sings before she sort of finds her pitch. I've heard it a few times lately but I can't think where and would like to know what you call this, or some better examples of it. Many thanks,H. Members highmtn
They are deliberately letting their voice "break", or yodel as they start the line. Some refer to this as a "glottal stroke".It's common in country and hillbilly vocal styles. Hank Williams, Sr. used it all the time. They are quickly breaking from head voice into chest voice and getting that twangy yodeling sound, or "cry" wherever they want to add it to the song. All the Best.
