Advice for a non-singer?

Hi!

I guess I could use both a pep talk and some real advice. I'm not a singer - don't really enjoy it, don't get a lot of compliments or requests. But I play guitar (the longest-running love of my life) in a couple of local bands and am sometimes called on to sing.

Blues isn't too bad - it's mostly just emoting in key. But anything more melodic is beyond me. Some of my biggest complaints:

1. Microphones. I've mostly used SM-57s and SM58s. People are always telling me to move closer, move away, sing directly into them, sing off-axis. What's a singer to do? I've been browsing microphones. The Sennheiser E945 looks promising but expensive. Is a better mic worth it, or should I be happy with 57s and 48s?

2. Monitors. They're always either silent or deafening. I've never used one that helped. Mostly they either make me think my voice is carrying when, in fact, I can't be heard - or they make me think no one can hear when, in fact, I'm blasting the audience. I know they're supposed to be useful. But what good are they?

3. Memorizing. I'm forgetful by nature and can sing a song a hundred times without absorbing it. How do you do it? I've tried vitamins, leafy greens, deep breathing, even getting my many metal fillings removed. And other things that seem to have slipped my mind.

Here are some samples of my singing:

Not looking for miracles. Just want to sound a little better. Suggestions?

Thanks!
