How can you keep a consistent tone when you get beyond a certain pitch?

First off, by no means am I a good singer, I just have a good ear for pitch.

I have a less than spectacular voice, but lately I've been messing around recording and I noticed something. I have decent tone when I'm within a certain range, but to hit certain higher notes, my voice will just die (as in no sound/squeaky crack) or I readjust where I'm singing from (I don't know how to explain this) but that makes my voice sound really weak...

Any experience with this problem?

Are you referring to switching from a diaphragm voice to a "head" voice or falsetto?

I'd say that's one of the toughest things to practice consistantly, being able to move in and out of those distinct styles and maintain a blend or balance.... usually strengthening the falsetto and reinforcing the top end approaching falsetto.

Al would definitely have a more educated answer for you. I can only speak from what I figured out on my own by trying to figure out what works for a song without shredding my vocal chords.
