  • Anyone trying Windows 8?

I'm thinking about it for my PVR. (Homebuilt running Beyond TV) The machine is about a year old and running Windows 7. I stopped by the Windows store in Park Meadows mall and with a touch screen, It's pretty slick. I don't have a touch screen, but when I finally upgrade my Macbook Pro, its replacement will have to have a touch screen. (It's only 2 years old and I'm not missing any power at this point. I fully expect to be using it at least another 3 years. Nice laptop. Battery life about 9 hours of my normal use per charge.)

I have so little confidence inthe MS release engineers that I will wait a while to see what happens with W8 (w+8= wait!)

I run W7 on this machine, and it is solid as a rock...but I had Vista briefly, and the difference is night and day...not to say MS didn't get it right, but their track record is sketchy, to say the least. Plus, the touchscreen units available at present that will run W8 are not all that impressive as yet.

Best Buy sent me an email last week when Windows 8 launched (via their website) on what I thought was a good deal for a HP Envy Ultra-book touchscreen notebook, I thought why not.

I'm still fooling around with it. All I can say at this point Wynn, I'm reminded when I cut my teeth on Windows 95, I did a lot of clicking ( in this case touching) and reading until I understood how the OS worked. Of course I'm not coming into it without any understanding of the terminology but everything we've learned since Windows 95 is pretty much out the window. No pun intended. I read some reviews before Windows 8 official launch and some reviewers thought the learning curve was going to be steep, I wouldn't say all of that but its not a very intuitive OS. I'm glad I purchased another computer to mess around on because I would've had some problems if I needed to get some work done using this new OS.

P.S. The touch screen? That got old pretty quick; I hurried up and purchased a mouse. I'm not sure touch screen technology is conducive to working on a desktop/notebook computer. I think touch tech is better left to the tablet market.

It's almost inconceivable that people who use their computer for serious work will want to give up a keyboard, mouse, and Start-menu/desktop type interface. Does MS seriously expect me to use something like Excel or Visual Studio or Photoshop with a freaking touch screen? Can I possibly be that much of a dinosaur that that sounds ludicrous to me? Stupid little phone or tablet apps where you have to click on a few buttons here and there are fine with touch screens, but I don't see how a serious desktop pc could ever work better with a touch only interface and no easy access to files with a Start-menu and desktop.

Congratulations MS, you may have driven everyone who used Windows to actually get work done over to Ubuntu. I use Ubuntu for some things, but I've spent decades defending Windows over Unix/Linux as superior for most day-to-day tasks. The irony is bitter.

Touchscreen seems about as obvious and intuitive an user interface you can have short of direct brain linkage.. that being said I haven't tried W8 and haven't heard much good about it.. but eventually - I tihnk touch screen is where we're going.

Like I said, touch interfaces are fine for many things, and maybe even the best for some things. I could probably even get used to the feedback-less feel of a touch keyboard. What I really don't understand is how anyone can do anything resembling precision work without the much finer control that a mouse gives than a finger. What if I wanted to put the cursor between the "s" and "e" in the word "resembling" in the previous sentence because it was misspelled? How can you even do something like that reliably with a big fat stubby finger?

If you're on a HP computer, you might be out of luck. There is an issue on those computers that won't allow you to install Windows 7 if it came with Windows 8 installed. Contact HP before attempting this for your computer.

The more I used Windows 8 the more I hated it, I found it tedious. Just my luck the HP Ultrabook I purchased had issues with Internet connectivity and its been my experience with HP computers, either they work very well or they are a continuous nightmare. I'll stick with Windows 7 and my Mac.

The thing that puts me off about Windows 8 more than anything is their 'Surface'.

I watched a review of it on Youtube and by the time they started to bolt on that weird keyboard and run the Surface desktop, it reminded me of a really crumby old school Windows laptop.. I don't know what those guys are thinking.. ??!!??

Although I am a died in the wool Mac man, I do use windows machines and have one at home for gaming, running windows 7. The thought of running a Windows version of iOs/OSX on a Win machine makes my skin crawl a bit.. Those guys should stick at what they're bad at and continue to try and make they basic desktop Windows machines run properly...
