  • Mac n00b help answer a few questions please! GARAGEBAND

    Okay check it out.....

I now have two MAC's which are pretty "bare bones"...

I'm a pc guy so I don't know much about them. Both say g4 on the case, one when it's booted up in system info says it's a g4 processor, the other says g4.

I would like to set one up for recording and make one "Badass" out of the two.
The main difference between them is the processor speed one being 800mhz (g4) and the other being lower, have to double check what it is. I believe it's a g4 p60

Is there any place to download Garageband free? I really want to try it out.

Is there a way to "Wipe" MAC's like pc's installing a fresh OS, both are used and have password protected accounts etc.

Any guidance or insights would be awesome.

You're going to have real trouble turning one into a "badass" given the fastest one you've got is only 800Mhz g4. Truth be told, Garageband will be struggling to even be "somewhat imposing" - Just being honest here.

IF you do need to wipe the drives and "start fresh" you need the OS installer CD/DVD - which would have come with the machine, or you can use a retail copy. I wouldn't put anything more recent that OS 10.4 on there though. And if you need garageband, it's part of the iLife suite. I'm thinking something circa iLife '06 would be of the generation of the hardware you have.

I used to use Logic Audio 3.5 on a Mac G4/400. Worked fine although it was hardly hardcore compared to what I can do today on a Macbook Pro with Logic Pro 7. Very usable at the time though.

Awesome guys, I have 1.25 ram on one with the GarageBand version 3.0.4 on it. Believe the OS is 10.4
Should I try upgrading the software for the OS?

I can't figure out how to change eq etc in GarageBand 3, gotta work on it. Also, how far can I upgrade the GarageBand on an older Mac like this? I just want "self promotion" quality stuff, nothing too professional

If it were me. I'd generally be very cautious about upgrading GB on an old Mac. As version numbers rise, so do (generally..) the system requirements. If GB3 is working to your needs then it could be a shrewd move to stick where you are until you know your limitations with what you have. I think GB had the 'freeze' mode so if the CPU gets too stressed, then freeze the track (read up on this as I don't readily remember...).

OSX 10.4 sounds like a lot for the machine to handle. That said, I can't think how efficiently it may or may not work on an old G4. Some things become set in time so i'd advise not to be too eager to upgrade and try and find ways of enjoying the machine with the software that was available around that era.

            Regards. Rimmer

G4 processors can't update beyond Leopard. (Yours may not be able to update that far either.) You won't be able to run Snow Leopard, that requires an Intel processor.

                Correct.

You could try, but I would make a bootable backup before doing that. You never know what will happen until you try it. Note that OS 10.5 requires 512MB RAM just to startup. Your G4 probably supports a maximum of 2GB of RAM. You could probably eek out more performance with additional RAM than you can with upgrading the OS.
