I have a 9 yr old who wants to get into band and try the Flute. Do I rent for the first few months or just spend the $140 and buy one to start? buy one used if a decent one is available. depending on the store rentals can be a real ripoff. don't get an open hole flute for your kid and beware the no-name chinese brands. $140 is a price that scares me, usually nothing is playable is in that price range (even used) odds are that flute is due for an overhaul at a repair bill of higher than $140. for a beginner $200-500 is more realistic and rental is solution if that is beyond your means. have a look on 1800usaband.com they usually have some affordable stuff. ill let the woodwind people tell you about brands to look at im a brass player here
Members sunburstbasser
If the brand is Yamaha or one of these, it'll probably be OK: http://www.conn-selmer.com/content/brands.php
