Yes the dead can do alot of things, and rock is one of them.

Example of a rocking Dead song?

Their cover of Turn on Your Lovelight on Live Dead.

In fact, anything sung by Pigpen (in the band from the beginning until his death in 1973).

I really like CCR. After all, here was a rock band that had Freddie King cover one of their tunes (Stuck in Lodi).

I love the old Allman Brothers as well. Steely Dan? Amazing stuff. Elliot Randall's guitar work in Reelin in the years is some of my all time favorite playing.

For me, I dont need a "best". Plenty of "great" is out there and I am lucky to have the exposure to it that I have had.

I have no idea who the best american rock band is, but CCR is one of the quintessential ones. Completely unmistakeable sound, and very american sounding.

There were to many great bands to call CCR the best. They certainly were one of the most loved. Any classic cover band that doesn't have a few of their songs on the set list "ain't fer ****************".

I really like CCR but I can't put them in the top10, maby top 15.
Top 10 though (and this was hard) in no particular order:
                      Lynyrd Skynyrd
                      Aerosmith
                      Tom Petty and Heartbreakers
                      Bruce Springsteen and E Street
                      The Doors
                      Cheap Trick
                      Van Halen
                      John Mellancamp
                      Pearl Jam
                      Styx

                      next 5:
                      ZZ Top
                      CCR
                      Eagles
                      REM
                      Journey

                      Next 5:

God I need to get a job and get a life
"Ish What did I just say ?"

What the hell do you think rock and roll is? Oh, and you forgot the blues, jazz, and r&b elements. The "amplified" blending of country, blues (which falls into the 'folk' category, btw), and r&b is how rock and roll was invented to start with. Only later did a bunch of ham-fisted one dimensional butt-rockers lose that.

Tony Rice and David Grisman seemed to think that Jerry was a good bluegrass picker. I mean, I know they're just a couple of guys with an unqualified opinion and all, but still....

Back to CCR, absolutely. Pretty much every album (with the exception of the aforementioned "Mardi Gras") functions as a greatest hits album on its own.

CCR makes a great candidate for "greatest American rock band", as do the Dead, the Allman Brothers, Little Feat, Skynyrd (pre-crash) the Ramones (one of the greatest American bands, but they didn't have near the depth and diversity of the other bands mentioned...they were still great and incredibly influential though, so they deserve inclusion).

Fogerty's right up there with Dylan, Smokey Robinson, and John Prine in regards to American songwriters, imo.

                            Steve
                            Pigpen said it was OK!
