Actually, I think I like Eddie's rhythm playing better than anything else he did. All those tasty fills in between the chords, and his impeccable timing were awesome.

It's around the internet. The most popular unauthorized release is probably "That's All Folks", which is basically a compilation of a lot of their unreleased stuff. I've got that, VH live at Aeros Bogarts 1976, and a few other compilation disks of pre-1978 stuff. I think there is a VHboots website or something out there with at least 100 old bootlegs. People may not realize how much club work they did before they got their break.

+1. I've never been a fan of EVH's solos. But his rhythm work is so impressive. Just give a listen to Somebody Get Me a Doctor.
My favorite Van Halen tune is Panama. I love the part when Roth starts talking & you can hear Ed playing in the background. That riff sounds so smooth & laid back & then he strikes those chords & it sounds very agreessive.
Another fave is Dreams. There's a part near the end where Ed does about a measure of tapping that fits better than anything else he's done. Great song on a great record.

            Happy Trails .

For me, whenever I listen to this one I always end up singing along. It just seems to sum up what DLR era VH was all about.

            Everyone join in.

In most of the interviews that I have read with EVH, he always claimed that Eric Clapton was his main influence. Yet for me, the main influence in his playing appeared to be Hendrix, especially with regard to his rhythm playing.

DLR era VH seemed to achieve the same level of interplay between voice and guitar that Hendrix achieved. I always felt that this element of EVH's playing was severely overlooked.
