i'll break it down thusly.......i'd travel, and did in Nov 2002, 1200 kms to Vancouver to see Axl's new GnR, wouldn't do that for metallica.

    i think Hetfield > Axl.

You mean to that first show where he didn't show?

Funnily enough, I was in Philly when the 2nd riot broke out. Oh well, everyone knows the next best thing after going to a GNR show is being in a GNR riot.

In fact, the only Metallica Riot I can think of was because of GNR. So they get the edge in badassedness.

Axl, Duff, and Slash dated supermodels. Edge, GNR.

Axl and Slash have been HEAVILY imitated. Very unique style. No one imitates KH unless they're in a gay porno.

GNR has songs with string arrangements and PIANO. Piano makes things sound epic and cool. Metallica shys away from anything that isn't guitars and some strings. GNR wins again!

If GNR had a documentary made during the implosion of that band, I bet it would have been a thousand times more interesting than Some Kind of Monster.

Only one good album?! I think the Use Your Illusions are FANTASTIC. I LOVE almost every song on there. It goes from punk, to metal, to ballads, to COUNTRY, to epic, to even a touch of electronica. Something for everyone!

If you want diversity in Metallica, you have to listen to ReLoad (boo!) or Garage, Inc. (c'mon!).

BTW, I like Metallica a lot.

But Guns N' Roses is one of the greatest bands of the 20th century in my opinion, and really turned me onto rock music.

        so?

Axl's a rock god, Hetfield say ooohhhwaaahhh too much.

Axl can also write a stunning piano song, while het is more limited. Plus, i just like the Axl screech that everyone seems to bag on.

yep, i was at the Vancouver riot. Waiting to see Axl for 10 years....funny enough, i didn't get excited even standing in line, because i knew there was a chance.......so 7:30 rolls around, we're still in line, the crowd starts "you don't ****************ing think so do ya?", next thing, a black security guard with the look of absolute fear pokes his head out the door at a bunch o bikers and informs us the band isn't there (it was just Axl), all hell breaks loose. A good time nonetheless.....

            Heh cool.

I've been waiting like 15 years to see GNR also! I must be the biggest fan I know of them.

Anyway, we decide to get tix for Philly because my idiot friend thought it'd be easier than arranging the parking at Madison Square Garden (the night before Philly, which, incidentally, ended up being the last show of the tour).

So we go to Philly and watch the tail end of CKY and some DJ guy tear it up for like an hour and a half! We all kinda knew something was fishy because of that.

Then they have everything set up. We can see them test the lights (looks awesome) and all the gear is set up behind this huge flag that covers the stage.

Then, all of a sudden we see the people on the sides of the arena HURL eveyrthing they can at the stage (apparently, they could see the roadies breaking down the equipment). Chants of "Axl sucks!" start to rip around the venue. Then the sound guy comes out and, as quickly as he can, whips up the soundboard and high tails it out of there.

All **************** breaks loose. Chairs flying. Garbage everywhere. I kinda thought about trying to nab me a Gibson LP for a fleeting moment (hey, I was in a riot and not thinking straight), but realized I'd get beaten to death by a 7' man who wears a KFC bucket on his head if I were caught.

So instead we just trashed stuff until the cops came and then we went back home (all the way to Syracuse, NY), pissed off as hell.

And funny thing is, if Axl were to play again, I'd totally be the first idiot getting tickets in my area I realize my relationship with him is a lot like an abused woman with her **************************** husband

                  ss.

#1 James Hetfield is a million times better than Izzy Stradlin in every sense possible.

#2 Metallica can hardly be described as a band that did 'one thing', because they've often been slammed for evolving musically. Besides, I see no more real versatility in Guns 'n Roses' music than Metallica's.

#3 As a live band, the comparison is a ****************ing joke, whichever era and in any situation. G 'n R SUCKED live compared to most legendary rock bands, and compared to Metallica, they sounded like a bad garage jamming for the second time.

                      +1000

There's a lot more to rhythm guitar playing than chuggalugging on the low E string. Izzy wrote some truly awesome stuff, and his rhythm work was always interesting. I'll sit down with some GnR tab and be blown away by the complexity of the rhythm work, whereas Metallica, I can pretty much count on riding the E string (and maybe A, sometimes JH manages to find it) for much of the chorus.

Me too bro, I keep wondering if the mother****************er's ever going to update his website?

But on that note I don't consider "Axl" to be synonymous with "Guns n' Roses". GnR died when Slash and the others left. Bringing Matt Sorum in was a good move, I really think he's the best drummer there is today (**************** LARS). So I think GnR's first loss was Izzy, but Gilby managed to fill his spot ok...when Slash and Duff, and Matt wound up leaving though, the band went with them. In an altercation where Axl was badmouthing Slash with his new guitarist Paul Huge, Matt told him that without Slash, there was not Guns n' Roses, to which Axl replied, "I AM Guns n' Roses!!"

I'd have to heartily disagree. Still a better frontman than Hetfield though, who is only capable of "oooh yeahhaaaah" or putting an "aaaahhh" at the end of half the words.

Damn this is so hard for me. I don't know if i can vote. Slash is probably the my most influential guitarist and Appetite is one of those albums that REALLY got me into rock music. And i still love both the Illusions too.

Metallica was equally influential in my life as far as metal went. They got me into thrash and eventually the heavier side of metal in general (like death metal). Master of Puppets was one of those albums that i must've played non-stop for about a month...

Breaking it down i have to give the slightest edge to Metallica. They both have great material, but Metallica released slightly more than GnR. Slash is a far superior guitarist than KH, no doubt though. But that can't make up for the fact that 3 great albums wasn't enough from such a supremely talented group. Though the fact that Metallica has sucked ever since 93' or so doesn't help their case any...
