  • How long has rap been around?

Because when I was a kid, and this goes back to 1969/1970, the guys in my neighborhood taught me this poem:

    Listen mother****************er from another land,
I was walkin' up the alley with my dick in my hand,
    Looked up a tree,
    What did I see?
Goddamned n***** gonna piss on me,
    Picked up a rock,
    Hit him in the cock
And ran 24 mile on the city block.

This was South Central L.A. and that sounds an awful lot like rap to me.

It could have been Black Metal. Did he have a mace?

there's plenty of proto-rap stuff from around that time. Last Poets, Gil Scott-Heron, etc

what I really want to know is why this guy was walking around some alley holding his dick? sounds pretty shady.

It's only rap if you make those ghetto hand signals while you're rappin it.

I remember something similar. I'm pretty sure it's not rap because we were white as white can be.
We were just trying to write songs about prostitutes and lesbians, that's all. - Paul McCartney

Rap/hip hop as we know it? Since the late 70's I think?

So white people wrote the first wrap song?

Maybe it's not rap because actual instruments are being played.
