  • Soooo, what does the socialist takeover of France mean?

As an American, I thought that France had been socialist ever since we saved their asses in WWII. But it turns out that they just now elected a socialist president, as if such a thing existed. Does this matter?

The main thing will be how this effects the Eurozone agreements regarding austerity measures which I believe the new guy wants to renegotiate with more emphasis on growth rather than cutbacks. Fun times.

agreed. this puts the German Social Democrats in quite the bind. Im waiting on Merkels response. As much as I support the Tories as the current british govt, im afraid TOO MUCH austerity will lead to a UK double dip recession. Subsequently i feel the same tack on the Franco-Germanic Axis, will lead to a worsening of conditions in the Euro Periphery. Greece, spain, portugal, etc. im not a sarkozy fan or an austerity straightjacket fan but a Merkel Hollande kerfuffle is not in the ECBs best interest

Hopefully less forced austerity and a little less misery for those of us living under the iron fist of Frau Merkel and the EU/IMF troika.

Unless I'm much mistaken the UK's already double-dipped.

It's almost as if government spending is a large component of economic growth and austerity is a terrible and dangerous idea!

Why is that so odd? Almost all countries in Europe have some form of parliamentary socialist party, some countries (like mine for example) have more than one. Fran
