Comes up in conversation all the time with one of my best friends, but he's the social media director for the City of Hope cancer hospital chain and has been obsessed with internet culture for years. Guy eventually wants to do a PhD in digital communications or somesuch.

      Yes
It's been said to me on a number of occasions, usually in the context of discussing the transmission of culture.

      Pretty much this.

            Yes.

            How do you pronounce it?
It's hard to face the truth, but I suppose you yourself realize that if you'd had just a little more courage, just a little more strength of character, you could have been dead by now. No such luck.--P. J. O'Rourke--

That's how I've been saying it. Thanks.

Which is one of the many things that irritates me about that word. I mean it's gotta be based of the french word, right? So it should at least rhyme with "them." Over in the political forum they really like it.

My mother recently asked me what a "mem" (as in "stem") was.

                              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meme

The word meme originated with Dawkins' 1976 book The Selfish Gene. To emphasize commonality with genes, Dawkins coined the term "meme" by shortening "mimeme", which derives from the Greek word mimema ("something imitated").[1] He said that he wanted "a monosyllable that sounds a bit like 'gene'".[1]

Nope, it's from the Greek. So it's pronounced like the 'eme' in phoneme, sememe, morpheme etc.
