  • Voyager enters unknown region at solar system's edge!

Apparently it's now on the magnetic highway in a new solar system! Freakin' cool. So how long until a Star Trek I scenario... http://blog.sfgate.com/science/2012/...2%80%99s-edge/

Impressive for sure. I often thought we should build a probe with minimal instruments and shoot it as fast as possible towards the nearest star, or stars. Surely with technology today we can build something that can go faster than voyager and stay powered up longer. Imagine seeing what is orbiting those stars one day.

To reach even the closest stars in single lifetime you'd need to achieve relativistic speeds. Even for the smallest unmanned probes we are centuries away from that. And even if we could do it the craft would fly past another solar system so fast it would have little time to see anything.
