  • Time Magazine lists Ten Best Electric Guitar Players of all time

I don't take too much issue with it however I would have preferred to see others, like Jeff Beck, Mark Knopfler, SRV, Santana, the classic legends.

I'm glad BB is up in the top 5, it's also nice to see that Prince made the top 10 too but IMHO there are other amazing guitar players that might be better suited to some of those positions.

Without Chet Atkins or Merle Travis it is a flawed list.

I don't agree with Slash even tho I am a fan. He doesn't have enough time in.
Chuck Berry is aweful. Scotty Moore would have been a better choice.
Prince doesn't use the guitar enough although he is great.

Chet Atkins and Brian Setzer should have made the list.

Johnny Ramone? Not really someone I see as a great guitarist. Hendrix is pretty popular but the thing I don't get about him is every single video I've seen of him playing live he hacks his songs all to ****************.

Yeah, I like Prince enough from the electric I have heard that it seems fair that he might be underestimated in general, so it was nice to see him recognized.

I didn't agree with Chuck Berry either.
Keith Richards is ok, but I don't think he deserved top 5.
I think Les Paul deserved to be higher than number 8 to. Considering his name is on one of the leading brands of electric guitars nowadays.

Still good after after 40 years dead

Still boring after 25 plus years

Without a great backing band, he could hold his own at the GC on a Saturday afternoon

              who doesn't love Keef

Clapton best stuff was done 40 years ago, I do like his old stuff though

Same with Page, good player in his day, a bit sloppy, but I like

Berry set the stage for a lot of stuff that would follow

              Les, always good

I have to agree with Mike.

Slash should go WAY down, along with Chuck Berry and Prince.

Dave Gilmour should be in the top 5.

Rock guitar wouldn't exist without Chuck Berry. The only question should be who belongs on the list with him.

And that's the problem here. Too subjective. No way to define 'best' when there's so much ground to cover. But if that means "best player of the instrument", there's no way Ramone or King or Clapton or Berry make the list. And no matter how technically proficient, there's always gonna be someone out there with greater proficiency.

So I'd change that list significantly. One must first grasp the spirit of the phrase electric guitar. And to that, no one stated it better than Captain Beefheart: "Walk with the devil. Old Delta blues players referred to guitar amplifiers as the devil box. And they were right. You have to be an equal opportunity employer in terms of who you're bringing over from the other side. Electricity attracts devils and demons. Other instruments attract other spirits. An acoustic guitar attracts Casper. A mandolin attracts Wendy. But an electric guitar attracts Beelzebub."

In that spirit, here's my list - in no particular order:
                        Blackmore
                        Gilmour
                        Hendrix
                        Trower
                        Prince (yes, he belongs)
                        Frank Marino
                        Zappa
                        Brian Jones
                        Page
                        Pat Thrall
                        ______________________________________________
