  • Buster was fooling with a rattlesnake

I thought I was hearing cicadas until it slowed down, I followed the sound until I saw Buster staring down the snake that was coiled and
    ready to strike.
He wasn't getting too close, the only reason he is still alive after living in the brush for so long is by knowing when to quit messing
    with a mad snake.

It's kinda hard to see, but I wasn't going to get any closer.

Cool. I've never actually seen a rattler up close.

I was hiking in Tasmania and suddenly noticed a coiled black snake about two feet away. Amusingly, Wikipedia says balck snakes are not found in Tasmania.

If it looked like the snake below (Black Mamba), you're lucky to be alive -- worse than a cobra.

He was giving it the stink eye and was all tensed up, I could tell he had seen them before and wasn't going to back down,
and wasn't going to get in striking range either. I cut the head off with a shovel and the jaws continued to bite for a full
minute and was still doing it when I buried it and put a rock on it. Then when I went to cut the rattle off, the bloody neck was striking
                      my arm, which was freaky.

I only killed it because it was close to the house, I don't go out of my way to kill them. I actually was getting worried
since I hadn't seen one in about 4 years, and normally I had to kill 4 every year because they were close to the house,
or in the garage or something

It was about 3 1/2 feet long and thick......what's spooky is when the get over 5 feet, because they aren't skinny, the biggest
I killed was almost 5 1/2 feet, and he was as thick as my wrist, and that much rattler looks gigantic, the head was huge. I kept
the rattle but lost it, and I would have kept the head but I don't like the idea of fooling with and getting bit.

For every one you kill, you' have to deal with 15-20 times the vermin.
But anyway, my friedn had a housecat that was fairly regularly bringing smaller rattlesnakes to the porch and dropping them as a "gift".
So yeah, a cat that knows how to hunt can and will get a rattler, but not one THAT size!
