  • OT: Opinions on the quality of this backing track?

I'm working on a series of backing tracks that musicians can get and jam along to for practice. I'm looking for feedback on this first track. I'd like to work out any kinks before I have 30 of these completed. Check it out here: https://soundcloud.com/mattsams/blues1c-jam-track

Is the sound quality good? Is the track varied enough? Does it sound like it would be fun to jam along to? Should I add anything to it?

EDIT: Here's the latest version, cleaned up and longer.

Cool groove! The bass sounds like it's distorting a bit and I was wanting to hear just a little variation of the line its playing, although you did bring the b7 into it I think before the keyboard solo. The keys seem pretty distorted and somewhat overpowering when they come in, less later when you lay back a bit. Usually, when these things have a solo it comes at the beginning, so the rest of the track is open for soloing. Also, probably good to make it longer so jammers don't have to keep setting it back to the beginning. Nice work! Been thinking of making one or two of these myself at some point.

While she's talking, I'll use my mind to think of other things. She can't stop my mind!

Yeah, I keyed in on the distortion right away too - but I think it's the EP that's grinding a bit too much... and the EP may be a touch hot in the mix too. Outside of that, nicely done!

Thanks Phil and OD. The distortion on the keys are the virtual instrument I chose. I can easily switch it to a cleaner sound now that I have the programming done. It's only keys and drums on this track. I was thinking of adding a bass line, but I kind of wanted to let it be a jam track if you play bass or guitar. Maybe I'll make two versions. One with a rhythm guitar and a bass and one just keys and drums.

What do you guys think of that?

I think it works fine as a backing / practice track for either guitar or bass as-is - with a cleaner EP sound of course.

I don't think it's necessary to add bass to it, beyond the left hand stuff the EP is playing.

Cool. So someone would find these to be useful? Just longer and a little more variety?

I think so. The groove is nice, the piano is very nice - it would make a nice practice / jam track IMO. You might want to put the piano solo more towards the start and then just vamp after that, but outside of that, and a cleaner EP patch and putting the drums up a touch, I don't know what else I'd suggest doing to it. I could change it, but I don't think it would make it "better", if you know what I mean.

Yep... vary/free the bass and clean up the Rhodes a bit (but not in the solo, the dirt is great there!)

That some great rhodes playing, man!!!

Thanks! But, I just programmed it... I didn't actually physically play it.

Another vote for a cleaner keys version, I would definitely grab it for a practice or lesson track... The programmed keys are fantastic!

                        Nice job Kreatorkind...
Are you aware that there are people in this world that have a severe medical condition which causes them to be that way? My mother for instance is one of those people. She is a truck driver that has bad knees and a bad back from driving the truck but you probably do not care about that case either. Jesus Saves..
