IIRC, there were a grand total of two females who used to hang out here a lot. One of them still makes occasional appearances.

As far as African-Americans go, who knows what race/ethnicity most of us are unless we announce it at some point.

Like I said, I know we have at least one African-American regular, but he doesn't bring it up much. (Or I'm pretty sure he is. Who knows for certain? Might even be female. )

There may be others. Maybe they are lurking and laughing just watching all the old white guys make fools of themselves with their proclamations and "insight" into how black folks should be behaving.

And how exactly do you tell? Unless someone tells you, there's no way to tell ethnicity or gender online - which is one of my favorite things about forums! People are forced to take people as they are, based on what they think and say - and can't prejudge them based on their plumbing or pigmentation.

It always seemed weird to me that the only people on a political forum ''discussing'' social issues which affect women and blacks - are old white guys.
Who are you callin' White? Sure, I have Irish and English heritage, but I also have non-White ancestors too... sometimes even your eyes can lead you to mistaken assumptions. And your assumptions are most assuredly mistaken. Not everyone who posts here is White.

Hell, there is even thread that was allowed to stand here, in which white people were calling into question the ''black pedigree'' of the last president, and the legitimacy of him calling himself ''black''. Maybe it's the fact that those types of threads are allowed here that drives people away....
IIRC, they were arguing over whether being half-Black (his mother was White) was enough for President Obama to be considered the "first Black President" or whether the first Black President would have to be someone with 100% African ancestry, and frankly, I thought it was ridiculous. But if people want to hold ridiculous opinions or debate silly subjects, that's on them, not me.

You're the one who started a thread about diversity. Does diversity of opinion bother you?

Is it because only middle aged white guys have the time or inclination to post in a music forum? Is it because women and blacks have posted here, and found it's been a hostile environment?
The women and people of color who post here all know (or should know) that I have their backs. I don't allow people to attack or belittle them based on their gender or skin color.

Unfortunately, the WORLD can be a hostile environment for people of color and for females... and they know that. This is a political forum, and political POV's are what are discussed here - it is to be expected that you'll come across POV's on such a forum that you might disagree with, or even occasionally find offensive. If someone is offended by different POV's, I'd strongly encourage them to check out the rest of the site and forget this forum entirely.

Everyone is welcome here, as long as they follow the rules - and the rules include not making personal attacks on any other forum member. And I get particularly annoyed (and ban accordingly) when those attacks have anything to do with race or gender (which are also specifically mentioned in the site rules...) so I'm sorry, but I don't think your premise holds water.

Just curious - i always thought music was something that attracted people from all walks of life.
Sure it does... but there are some caveats to that...

Quick question: How many female guitarists do you personally know? How about female drummers? Recording engineers?

Out of the overall number of guitarists / drummers / engineers that you know, I suspect they represent only a small fraction of the total.

I probably know more than you do if for no other reason than I've spent thousands of hours in recording studios where I get to meet a lot more musicians than the average person does. I DO know female guitarists, recording engineers, and drummers, and several of them I consider to be very good friends... and there are some outstanding musicians and engineers among them. But on average, there are fewer female recording engineers, drummers and guitarists than there are males. Why? That's a topic that we could spend considerable time discussing if you'd like, and we've done so before on the forums... but regardless of what the reasons are (and IMO there's more than one) it's not because the administrators of this site don't welcome them. The reason there are relatively few of them here is because there are probably fewer of them to begin with, and/or fewer of them who are interested in spending their downtime hanging out with a largely male group of peers and talking about music and gear... or politics.

Really ? What was ridiculous about it, a white guy starting a thread questioning who is allowed to call themselves ''black''?

Yeah, we've got one African American regular. He mentions it occasionally. And we've got a few Asian fellas from America and abroad. One Native American whose perspective is certainly informed. Plus we've got internationals--and a Russian.

No women though. Couple things: For much of guitar and gear lust's history, men got into the hobby and profession at a higher rate. Most of this forum is older. Younger folks use other types of social media for such discussions. So HCPP is a crop of older music hobbyists, which means they come from a time when men got into the hobby/art/profession at a much higher rate.

          That miiight be it.

Plus, maybe old men are just more likely than women to go into small forums and repeatedly go head-to-head yelling at the same people?? I mean, politely share nuanced discussions with the same people.

Are you suggesting that a White guy isn't allowed to have an opinion about it, or shouldn't ask others what they think about it? Didn't President Obama himself discuss the fact that he has both White and Black ancestry? Can't both groups rightfully claim him, just as he acknowledges both? Why does it have to be either / or? He's bi-racial. Does one have to be Black or White in order to discuss President Obama's ancestry? Can't Hispanics and Asians join the discussion too?

''Ridiculous'' isn't the R word I would have used. Ymmv.
Oh, I see - you're suggesting it's racist of them to do so. In what way?

Ridiculous, in what way?? as in ''troll thread'' ridiculous, or ''slapstick humor'' ridiculous?

oh is that how you interpreted the thread - a ''discussion'' of Obama's ancestry. Hmmm....what was the thread title again.....???

Considering the thread title, started by a white person, stated that Obama should not be considered black, because his bloodline is not sufficiently black enough. And who is the judge of ''blackness'' anyway?
Starting to see the implications, or do you need me to connect the dots for you?

You gave not one single answer to any of the questions I asked.

I'm not having a one-sided discussion with you. Either discuss things in good faith and have a bi-directional conversation where you respond to my questions too, or I'm not interested in discussing anything with you.

I'm not here to answer your questions while you ignore mine.

How does the OT know what race or ethnicity anyone is on this forum unless they have stated it in the past? If they have, how would the OT know they are telling the truth? It would be good to have a diverse group on this forum, but I do not anticipate a marketing campaign coming soon to promote more minority participation. Peace!
