  • I bet many of you are offended by this Dodge Ram commercial that ran during the Superbowl.

It has farmers praying in it, even a church. Better call the ACLU, your tender sensibilities have been violated.

Also, most of the people in it are white, which is bad. And there are those greedy farmers, taking subsidies. Plus farming is just not hip or cool, so again, call the ACLU. You've been violated.

Born and raised on a farm. Not offended. Mostly bored. My father hated Dodge. Real farmers drive Fords and Chevys.

(hey, somebody had to say it...)

You're an ass, Murphy. I'll bet you've never heard of -- let alone heard -- Paul Harvey. He was a radio news-and-commentary broadcaster for at least 50 years. Yes, he was "conservative," but not in the current idiom. Harvey occasionally did write commentaries like that in praise of one person or another. I'd rather that the Dodge Ram folks hadn't used Harvey (who died in 2009) for commercial purposes, but even so, it was good to hear his voice again.

Mr. Harvey had a number of standard phrases that he used: If introducing an odd or unususal story, he would say, "Here is a strange...", or "For what it's worth" as a wry closing comment, right before his sign-off, "This is Paul Harvey...Good Day."

A couple of his pet catch-phrases even entered the language: If you've ever heard, ""Reaganomics" or "guesstimate," he's the one who coined them.

Another Paul Harvey catch phrase that I think needs repeating -- and should be tattooed on the forehead of every numbskull who thinks he or she should be allowed to do what he or she wants without limit or restraint -- is this:

    "Self-government

    won't work without

    self-discipline."

That includes everyone from gun fanatics who think the Second Amendment is sacrosanct and should not be limited in any way to the big-money financiers and bankers who think they should be allowed to do what ever they damn well please so long as they personally get rich.

It should also be tattooed on the back of every politician's hand so he can read it as he's taking bribes or stainding up to disrupt what ever the other party is trying to do.

Before you try to manufacture outrage you might want to learn when the First Amendment's Establishment Clause applies and what it prevents.  You should also educate yourself on the concept of state action doctrine.

Chrysler isn't owned by the state/government so there is no first amendment violation.

So God approves of Dodge Ram and farmers? Perhaps. Should I be offended? No. Did I think it was a smart or interesting commercial? No. Did I think it was too long? yes. They were trying to sell an image using God. I might have a bit of a problem with that. The commercial sold more about God and farmers then it did about the Dodge Ram. They totally made it about image. THAT is bad marketing as far as I'm concerned. You want to sell me something? Tell me what it's going to do for me on a more practical basis. But then I'm a female and perhaps this was a commercial trying to get male ego.

Heard someone on the radio earlier observe that the true genius of the ad was placing it when everyone was just getting drunk enough so that everything sounded profound, and people who had never even met a farmer were tearing up and pledging themselves to quitting their jobs and becoming farmers Monday morning.

Farmers deserve subsidies more than any other industry. They take on more risk and work their ass off.

You guys hate it when the government takes money from tax payers and gives it to other people that didn't earn it. You call it socialism.

Yet as if by magic, socialism becomes a-OK, when it is being used to help rural republicans.

Probably because the farmers use it for all the right reasons while the liberal swine use the money to enhance their drug habits. It is the real reason subsidies were created. The politicians had no idea the liberals would try to defraud the system.

I am not offended, but quite amused by this weak-assed troll attempt by this lame-assed OP.

Ironically, the ACLU would defend this posters right to troll both weakly and lamely.

          Just so we're clear:

(I'm sure there must be a spectrum for this.)

Which is worse-  weak-assed or lame-assed?

          Who gives a ****************?

          It's not on public property.

          It's not government funded.

          It's not government endorsed.

It doesn't violate the Establishment Clause of the 1st Amendment in any way.

The fact that it's boring, pompous Paul Harvey promoting his phony vision of "American values" is Freedom of Speech.

Why should I be "offended" or want court action?  If I don't like it, I merely don't have to buy a Dodge Ram truck.

Why do you RWNTs have SO LITTLE understanding of the TRUE Liberal mind-set, but instead live in this evil fantasy world created by Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter, and a host of fundie Southern televangelist money-grubbers?
