  • I think I know why people are overweight

I was at Safeway today to pick up some Stevia for my coffee (bakery aisle). Overheard a dad tell his kids they couldn't have something because it was junk food but would they like some muffins or cookies or something.

Told this to the clerk and she told me of someone who had chocolate milk and a donut for their kid but the kid couldn't have the sugary cereal.

It used to be a woman's role to provide a healthy and nourishing diet for her family. Women don't want that responsibility, and you certainly don't want to leave it up to guys. We think a salad consists of a bowl of bacon floating in an ocean of thousand island dressing.

People are overweight because they lack self control. That's it.

Well, you may think like that. Why? Because you're a moron.

I am disappointed, Ms. Moonlight. Until now, I thought you were above rendering such unkind judgements. Unlike this clown:

Live must be wonderful in your world, Will, having all the answers even when you don't know the questions. I suppose next you are going to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting to yell something through the door about "drunks lack self control." Technically, your observations may have some "truth" to them, but functionally, they're worse than useless; more the ego-feed of an inflated, sanctiomonious ego than something constructive.

Have you ever considered trying to help the problem. Or at least shutting the [BLEEP] up and keeping your unwanted opinions to yourself?

There's more to it though. In addition to this ignorance there are physical differences in people. Some can increase their metabolism with very little effort per week, and that way lose weight. Others have a much harder time doing it. It's genetic (or epi-genetic).

In addition we have a huge industry that relies on people being ignorant, trying to convince them to buy more ****************, using indoctrination/propaganda/advertising.

Having said that the simple problem remains calories in vs. calories out.

I agree with that. Yet you can't deny that actually knowing what is good and what isn't (what is junk food and what isn't) might help cure some of the problem.

        ummm... yes, it is.

Not all the meals, of course, just breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

notice anything? like maybe how they are Japanese, how the plates they eat from are really small, and how the food is there to take from?

Seriously, if you disagree with me on this, you know nothing about Japan.

Americans are obese because they aren't told to stay thin systematically, not because of lack of self control.

I think it's clear from the fact that the staple diet in American traditional cuisine (which I'm referring to things like the Hamburger, or the New York Pizza) aren't very nutritional. They are mostly carbs and protein. There are the frequent Caesar salads, but really most people that you see in those diners never order one.
