  • Coltrane post A Love Supreme: noise or not?

It's noise to me. Sometimes unlistenable.

But everything from Blue Train to A Love Supreme is great.

I can't listen to it either.  I don't get "outside" jazz.

I'm willing to concede that I'm not sophisticated enough to see the beauty in it but I'm willing to bet that most of the people who say they like the real avant garde jazz are just hipster poseurs.

I hope we're not too messianic or a trifle too Satanic.

That's what I think. Not all, but most, like you said.

It's appropriate that Pharoah Sanders was mentioned in a thread about John Coltrane.  For me those two guys epitomize the perfect saxophone sound and playing.  For some reason as a young person I was able to get their music immediately and I think they had a big impact on my musical interests.

I'm a bigger fan of Wayne Shorter and Cannonball Addereley tone-wise and stylistically, but Coltrane has some of my favorite compositions, including A Love Supreme, Mr P.C., Equinox, Africa, Impressions, Blue Train, etc.
