  • Name a better drummer than John Bonham

It would be interesting to see your choices.

Try and say why your choice is better, or post a video showing why

How do you post a video here anyway? lol

      All good choices.

I'd add Gene Krupa, Mitch Mitchell and Stuart Copeland, just off the top of my head.

Don't know about better but I prefer Charlie Watts, Clyde Stubblefield, Art Blakey, some of those already mentioned here and a whole mess of old school R&B and blues drummers who no one's ever heard of.

Charlie's great. Although I was disappointed to find out he couldn't play the part in Tumbling Dice where the song kicks into another gear at the coda. That's one of my favorite drum parts. Jimmy Miller, their producer, had to play it. Charlie's still great though. And known to be one of the nicest and classiest guys in rock.

Carey is like Bonham with another set of arms.

the thing about Bonham that was so cool was that big , massive sound...how perfect was that for rock?

Well, he's probably unknown to most of you, but Pierre Moerlen who used to play with Gong was a fantastic drummer.

And Phil Collins used to be a beast.

And while I like Bonzo, he's no match for the aforementioned gentlemen. :catwink:

And Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene...

He was ok, unique anyway. I liked Christian Vander of Magma much more.

Helm has a unique style, but Bonham could play Band tunes yet Helm couldn't handle Zep tunes. Not near enough power.

Chad Wackerman has always been an amazing drummer.  Seen him with Frank Zappa and Alan Holdsworth.  Chad and Alan once played this 10 minute duet and it just ripped the roof of the far-queing place.

Carl Weathers from Gentle Giant is a very underrated drummer.  Listen to "Another Show".  It's tough to make all those asymetrical meters rock and also funky.

Apart from a Max Roach set where he played snare drum solo for the entire set, Vinnie Colaiuta is the best drummer I ever heard, so far.

Phil Collins was a monster player.  I once got the chance to sit right next to his kit and watch him play during a Brand X show in some now defunct club in NYC.  His footwork was amazing.

Dany Carey is the best thing about Tool.

Bill Bruford's snare can not be anticipated...ever.

The drummer from Tribal Tech.. Covington?  What's his first name?   Watch some of their youtube vids.

Bonham had such an identifiable sound and rhythm sense, and an original kick player.  Not many drummers can match his power.

I love Bonzo - one of very few rock drummers to actually SWING.

That being said, I could think of many drummers that I enjoy listening to as much as or more than Bonzo.
