    Jason Collins announces he's gay

    Does anyone care?

I couldn't possibly care less what he does with his dick but it took large balls to be the first active top level pro athlete to come out.  Chipping away at the stigma from within its stronghold took guts and will make a difference.

I hope we're not too messianic or a trifle too Satanic.

In other news...the Jets have jettisoned Tebow.

(Now, that's something I think we can all agree is worth a "hallelujah.")

The other issue is that "gay" is a major insult in sports. My bet is that teammates are going to have some major readjustment to go through.

A lot of them probably already knew.

Never been there. Do you like it? Are you a regular poster?

I don't think it's for me, but I'm glad that you enjoy it.

The fact that most pro athletes are more like a middle schooler than an adult, it will be interesting to see how this actually plays out

I think it's important.  Professional sports is a refuge of homophobia.  The more gay athletes come out, the more it will force the leagues, players, sponsors and fans to deal with the issue and accept gays as equals.

    This should NOT be news.

I agree, on the philosophical concept that one's sexuality should not matter when it comes to doing a job.

However, as Jason Collins is the first NBA player to be open about his sexuality, it's a little more important.  It's helpful, I think to show that not everyone has to be the prototype macho heterosexual to be competitive at a very high level in the NBA (and perhaps, by extension, in other pro sports).  It's also useful to show that not every homosexual spends their whole life prancing around in sequins.

If most of america didn't have the above stereotypes in their heads (on some level), then this Jason Collins story would not be a story.  But they do, and it is.

Some how I can't picture you even being qualified as a 4th stringer

The reality is that pro ball players tend to be more like a manchild than an adult

Until 2009 he was engaged to his girlfriend of 8 years before calling it off, so wouldn't he be considered Bisexual?

That's funny, because I'm absolutely sure you've never played sports.

Especially brave considering that he's black, as being gay seems to be even more stigmatized in the AA community than in many others.

I don't care about basketball or gay athletes of which I'm sure there are plenty.

Yep! Should have heard some of the black guys here already joking about it. "See what happens if that mofo sneezes some **************** or something on another player or team mate..hahahhahhahahahaaaaa" "Imagine this guy telling Ray Lewis. On Tv he'd be all nice. Off camera, Ray'd want to bust that dudes ass" hahahaahahhaahaaaaaaa

So I told them the dude was pretty brave, might have to put up with some **************** but he's the man for coming out. They said he aint the first gay black man, they were just laughing at the things other black athletes are saying and tweeting too..... "you know that aint the case in that clubhouse, but the have to go along with it"
