Insuring Musical Instruments and Band Equipment

This may have been talked about before and I missed so I apologize if that is the case. I was wondering if anyone insures band equipment, and if so what are some major companies that do?

 

Any info on this would really be appreciated.

There are a number of insurers for gear. The AFM used to have a list on their website, I have not looked in ages though...ah, still tucked away in there: http://www.afm.org/why-join/u-s-benefits

I believe that inland marine insurance will cover your gear as you hope from one gig to another.

I have my gear covered under my Home insurance policy. You do want to have pictures and serial numbers saved.

typically, they won't cover the gear if it is lost or damaged outside the home. Check your policy.

I believe you are right.

I'd check that policy.

 

I talked to my insurance rep and they don't cover a specific guitar. Say I owned a 1958 Gibson LP flame topper and wanted that insured up the policy. It's only covered under the general insurance policy, fire and theft from the home. You can up you contents part coverage, but it's a general contents coverage, not for that specific instrument. Which covers that instrument in a round about way.

 

 

If you play out and are tossing 5000 bucks of gear in to a 500 dollar car,( like my cousin said), you need something different.

I told my cousin , that might get out to a small coffee house gig, but try more 10-20 grand, in a 40 though dollar truck.

 

All kidding aside you want to looking into what is called Marine Inland Insurance. This covers gear in transit and at a club.

 

 

Inland marine insurance was first created to cover the transport of goods over water,1 but the definition of the term has expanded to refer to the coverage of goods in transit on land, as well as to the property of others that is at your premises or being transported to or from your premises.

Mine will cover my equipment outside the home, but not while I'm using it to make money. Not matter if I play for money once a year or 50 times a year. While I'm using it to make money the insurance won't cover it.

that's another wrinkle....which is what the gear insurers do, they cover you for the gigging, and I believe, transport to and from the gig. Now I have go dig out my policy and check...

Yeah I've always been overly conscious about insuring my possessions, so I keep up with a little more than most.
