Silly Gear that You Should Have Already Owned

I've been gigging for years and not once have I ever brought a fan with me. It's 90 degrees today. I just purchased a fan and can't wait to plop it right under my mic stand tonight.

Is there any gear that you should have purchased years ago and don't know why you never bothered?

"You can't play blues in an air conditioned room". Ha! No kidding, sometimes it's the simplest stuff that makes you go "duh"? With that in mind I'd say it was those super cheap rubber Welcome mats at Home Depot for covering cables in hi-trip hazard areas where the public might get close to. Definetly low-pro but does the job.

I've always carried a personal fan in the gig truck with the rest of my gear.

Rock 'n Roller cart...

Used to take 4-5 trips to/from vehicle to stage or storage for the entire kit and everything else (IEMs, electronics, etc.), now takes 2, and none on my back.

everybody in the band has at least one cart of some type.

a flashlight would have been handy more than once. I've got at least six that use 2 AA's but they never seem to be in the gig bag when I need one.

I've got one on my keyring and another magnetic one sticking to the bottom of my MixWiz. Those LED ones have incredible battery life.

I couple of circuit test tools. One for finding out what outlets are on the same circuit. Another to find out if there are wiring problems. (Bad ground or incorrectly wired hot line.)

By the way, what do you guys do in a place with wiring that is just plain wrong? Cancel the gig? Refuse to fire up until an electrician comes to fix it? One of the places is a casino that's less then 10 years old. (Bad ground.)

Years ago I worked in a huge office and grabbed a couple of the super duty ones that were for hallways and high traffic areas. They're a Godsend when it snows too. There's nothing worse than a wet stage !

I have a solar powered keychain led flashlight someone gave me. It's come in handy on many occasions.

In the suitcase I use for my pedals and cables, a fan takes up half the space. One of those small black ones. My drummer has a killer fan, one of these:

The power outlets on it are handy and it pumps some air. Everyone in my band has a fan on stage.

All of the above plus:

- Zip ties

- Soldering kit (iron, flux, solder)

- At least one of every type of connector/adaptor (xlr / 1/4 / speakon: barrels, gender changer's etc)

- Various meds including, Ibuprofin, antiseptic, band-aids, and Immodium (you know you've been there!)

- Super Glue to fix the string players fingers when they are busted open.

- Extra strings, batteries and cables

Ha! When I saw this post, I immediately thought of my band mates who always gripe about not having a fan. I bought a little Honeywell jobby for $12 bucks two years ago, and the thing is awesome for cooling me down.

I'd have to say "flashlight" is what's missing from my rig.
