I haven't posted here in ages, but I'm back in a new band.

I'm used to playing all originals, and this is my first foray into the world of covers.

We are leaning towards a hybrid deal where we play originals too, but so far all we have is 25 covers we are working on.

We have 2 gigs coming up. I'm the singer.

We are playing a mixture of 80s/90s rock.

This is not in any given order.....

- 3 Doors Down - Kryptonite

- Collective Soul - Heavy

- Lit - My Own Worst Enemy

- The Cure - Just Like Heaven

- Bryan Adams - Summer of 69

- Survivor - Eye of the Tiger

- Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy

- Ozzie - Crazy Train

- The Outfield - Your Love

- Goo Goo Dolls - Long Way Down

- Black Crows - Hard to Handle

- Cheap Trick - Surrender

- Alice in Chains - Man in the Box

- Bon Jovi - You give love a bad name

- Bush - Machinehead

- Green Day - Basketcase

- Jimmy Eat World - The Middle

- All American Rejects - Swing Swing

- Eddie Money - Take Me Home Tonight

- Weezer - Buddy Holly

- Journey - Dont Stop Believing

- 7 Mary 3 - Cumbersome

- Poison - Talk Dirty To Me

don't take this the wrong way. The set seems decent and if played well enough would keep me around... I see a set list with nothing too obscure as far as tunes go but also nothing that makes me go WOW! either.

I have played almost all opf these at one time or another.

Well, I have some time so what the hell... I will "grade" your set. Here is my opinion on what you got here if you were playing the average bars in my hometown... so remember YMMV

A: Great tune

B: Good Tune

C: Good Filler

D: Filler

F: Drop It

- 3 Doors Down - Kryptonite C

- Collective Soul - Heavy D

- Lit - My Own Worst Enemy B+

- The Cure - Just Like Heaven C

- Bryan Adams - Summer of 69 B

- Survivor - Eye of the Tiger F (unless you can make it so cheesy its great! Then B+)

- Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy C+

- Ozzie - Crazy Train B

- The Outfield - Your Love B

- Goo Goo Dolls - Long Way Down F (always bombed for us... Love the song though)

- Black Crows - Hard to Handle C+

- Cheap Trick - Surrender C+

- Alice in Chains - Man in the Box B (if the vocals are nailed)

- Bon Jovi - You give love a bad name C+

- Bush - Machinehead C

- Green Day - Basketcase C+

- Jimmy Eat World - The Middle C

- All American Rejects - Swing Swing C

- Eddie Money - Take Me Home Tonight C

- Weezer - Buddy Holly C

- Journey - Dont Stop Believing A

- 7 Mary 3 - Cumbersome C

- Poison - Talk Dirty To Me B+

I wouldn't put much stock in what other musicians think of your setlist. If it works well for you that's what matters.

sure enough if you find a crowd that it works for and you enjoy it... do it!

It has been said around here many times and I believe it- Presenation matters. There is a classic rock band in my area that some how injects so much "life" into the old classics they are awesome to watch and I can do so all night. Another band with the same set... not so much.

I'm a big fan of mixing originals into a covers band. When your audience gets used to them, they become just as good as any of the covers your doing. (Unless they're crap. But no one plays crap originals.) I'm just as good with mixing in rarely heard songs. (Used to always check out the B side of 45s. Played quite a few of them over the years. With music moving digital downloads, we've lost that.) If it's a dance band, you still need to keep it dance music. But there is so much out there that doesn't get it's due. My favorite song is King Crimson's Cat Food. From that you can see that I don't listen to music on the radio.
