Noise complaints - ugh...

So our favorite pool bar has been getting hassled by the cops/city about the noise recently. The manager called me and explained the situation in-depth. They have to go in front of the liquor board about it and it's become a huge mess for them. It hasn't been a problem for 10 years and BAM - now it's a problem to the point where they may have to stop having bands entirely.

I can see how maybe *we* could generate some complaints (although we always try to keep our volume down) or maybe the Friday night band, but last night they shut down a small roots/reggae rock act. I can assure you, these guys were not shaking the foundation. We get complaints from people 30 ft away at the bar that they can't even hear us, yet somehow we're still "too loud".

Bottom line: now we need to pare down our system and start an hour and a half earlier (6 - 10p). I'm not thrilled about doing either, but we'll do what we have to do.

Once it becomes a "battle" ... it's pretty much over.  Noise ordinance enforcement happens because somebody has made a conscious decision to go after an establishment.  Sometimes, their hand is forced because of a single neighbor who is either influential or persistent.  Sometimes it's because of other issues that local law enforcement has with the venue (parking issues, drugs in the parking lot, etc.).  Lots of times it has absolutely nothing to do with the bands' volume or noise whatsoever.

Regardless of whether the noise is truly the root problem - once a venue finds itself in the crosshairs of he location officials - it's usually all over but the crying.

Sorry to hear of your situation.....

I really hope that's not the case. Looks like we're going in with speakers on sticks and pods. We had to do that at a casino restaurant before and it sucked. It's going to suck more outside.

It'll be daylight for 3/4 of the show, too.. so we might as well forget about the light show while we're at it. Ugh. Who's going to want to dance at 6pm? This is not going to end well.

In the end, it always boils down to ONE person ruining everyone elses fun.  At least, that's my experience- not just with music, but pretty much anything that's fun.
