  • OT: Getting Snow?

So we get what's called "Lake Effect" snow in Buffalo. It's snow falling on the downwind side of the lake. It's generated by cold dry air passing over warmer water. It happens in "belts" which means a place could have a foot of snow and 10 minutes away can have none. That's what happened in the past 36 hours. All the places below are within 45 minutes of me. My little city saw 1". Even these numbers surprise me a little.

    Lake Effect Snow Storm TOTALS:

    ERIE COUNTY:
    COLDEN 44.0"
    WALES CENTER 33.0"
    BOSTON 31.0"
    GLENWOOD 31.0"
    EAST AURORA 20.0"

    ...

    CATTARAUGUS COUNTY:
    PERRYSBURG 41.0"
    LITTLE VALLEY 24.0"

    WYOMING COUNTY:
    VARYSBURG 37.0"
    WARSAW 34.0"
    SILVER SPRINGS 21.0"

I lived in the lake effect snow belt in Michigan pretty well my whole life. Lets just say it was a real challenging place to make your living as a pilot.. Where potts lives is ground zero for lake effect. That said its going to be in the low 70s and sunny here at south padre island.

The most Lake Effect snow affects me is that I get neglected by Grand Rapids weather reports. Bah Humbug.

GR and Kzoo are just on the edge of the lake effect.  I lived in niles mi and cassopolis prior to kzoo. and grew up in the south bend area. Those were pretty solid in the lake effect snow belt.  Potts is no doubt in the worst city in the great lakes area for lake effect.   they get hammered all the time.   As he said , 6 to 8 inches is SOP in the winter in places where you get lake effect.  The thing that keeps people off the road is when the vis goes down to where you cant see to drive or see drifts that stop even the most bad ass 4 wheel drive truck.   The danger isnt getting stuck ,, its having some other guy run into you when you are stranded out on the road.  We played gigs all the time in high school with 6 to 8 inch winter storms.  The old station wagon with studded snow tired loaded full of black face fenders and heavy gear made them go throught snow well, but they did handle like crap from being overloaded.   Looking back i am suprised our parents let us go gig in that weather , but it was normal winter driving.  down here people stay home when it rains lol.

God.. I'm seriously hoping my gig gets cancled tonight. I booked three Fridays at an Elk's Club that just dumped $180k into their bar. They told me that I didn't have to bring anyone and the place is always packed. The first time there were four people there and they didn't want to cut a deal- they wanted me to stay. The second time I begged on facebook and packed the place. Tonight..it's going to be dead and a complete waste of time.

I don't like driving in Michigan weather. I've gotta think it really sucks out in Tahoe with their 0 MPH curves. If the roads are even open that is.

We've received what looks like 3-4 inches so far today ... with another 2-3 predicted before it's done.  Been out getting set up for a gig at a local bar tonight ... and the roads are definitely ****************e at the moment.   Prior to the weather settling in we were looking forward to a good crowd (every table in the joint has been reserved for a couple of weeks ....) - but aren't sure what to expect now that the roads are such a mess.   What makes it worse is that this is the first real snow of the season.   Here's hoping our crowd doesn't let us down.

the detroit area kind of freaks out when they get snow ,,, the other side of the state near the lake ,, if the vis stays up people are pretty used to it ,, but i hear you on the first snow of the year.  Lots of fender benders because people havent got their winter driving skills up to par.  As for leaving early ,, most would be better off waiting till all the scared people get off the roads and leave before the amateur drinkers get on the road at last call.   A good many people had at least one vehicle that was 4 wheel drive when I lived in west michigan.  I always looked forward to behing able to play with the blazer in the crud.   Its one of the things i miss,, but i dont miss the snow blower lol.

Well ... we definitely got snow - but was pleasantly surprised by our crowd tonight.  It wasn't off the hook packed like it would have been had the roads been clear and dry - but it certainly wasn't a dead night by stretch.  Despite this project having gone a bit further between gigs than we usually care to - I was pleasantly surprised by our performance over all.   Usually a 6 week break tends to contribute to us having a rough spot or two - however, tonight, each of us seemed to be firing on all cylinders.  I feel like we came through what could be been a long night with flying colors.

Damn, I wish I hadn't left my gear in the van overnight. There's four inches of snow on the lawn now, that means I can't drive around to the back of the house and use the walk-out patio.

Sometimes I think i should buy two of everything so I'd never need to unload.
    Working...
