Looking for stage lighting especially back lighing. We play mostlty small bar to medium bars.

We just started a classic rock band about a year ago. Is this a good investment for us? Do we need all these lights? We already have a couple tress with 4 Par Cans on each tree on the side of the stage. We are thinking of adding back lighting. Any advice appreciated.

Get LEDs! Some Chauvet DJ SlimPARs would be great, or the new 4Bar LT system (4 PARs on one bar). A pair of Chauvet DJ wash FX units per side in the back would also be a great option. Conventional PARs with lamps are not worth purchasing. If you want to roll the dice there are also a lot of affordable options available on eBay and Amazon for direct-from-China lights, some are better than others, all are a step below name brands like Chauvet and ADJ.

Run for your life! Seriously those incandescents are out and people are giving them away. Do you use any kind of controller? What are your current light trees with 4 Par cans?

 

I have a very solid recommendation for cheap backlighting as follows:

For an 8 light system, (2) tree's of 4 pars:

(2) ADJ light stands. These are the best I've used - great clamps, and go to 12 ft tall:

Do not use the little angled bars - just remove the T-Bar with your lights on it and fold up the tripod. This way your light bars can remain pre-wired and ready to go.

These lights kick serious ass. They are feather lightweight, super bright, and with DMX programming they are very versatile. If you just want to make them fixed colors, then all you have to do is program each light and plug them in. When you wire them up you need to purchase some short IEC male to IEC female, so you can jump from one light to the next. Lastly, I would buy a 15 ft IEC cable as the power cable for each tree, thus not requiring an extension cord.

 

Two negatives with these lights:

1. The fans are a little noisy. Might be a bit much for a quiet solo act or church setting.

2. The built in sound activated chases are not good. They flash on & off like strobes - very annoying, but not an issue if you are using a controller. When I use them stand alone without a controller, I set some to fixed colors, and there is a nice built in program that has them cycle through a bunch of colors with a slow fade (speed is adjustable). When you set these parameters, the lights come back on the same way (they remember the last setting). The cool thing is if you have them wired to one power strip and the color fade option set up, they will all fade together when powered on, even without dmx cables or a controller.
