For what does VU stand?

Volume Unit, though it measures voltage. The meter must posess ballistics to reach about 95% of correct steady state reading in 300mSec and the signal is derived from a full wave rectified AC signal.

I have also heard it called Voltage Unit, but it may depend somewhat on the application (acoustic versus relative electrical measurement) and the area of the country.

it is volume unit, and it is something of an arbitrary measurement of program level.

it is not a ballistic meter, it reacts similarly to the human ear.. VUs are good for general mixing and what have you, but NOT FOR TRACKING TO DIGITAL

VUs are not fast enough to respond to transients which could cause overs

The VU meter must have the ballistics that I stated in order to conform to the VU principle which you said.
