Members johnnychange Posted February 10, 2007 Members Share Posted February 10, 2007 I have a set of speakers that are rated at 100 watts rms @ 8 ohms and a amp that will put out 500 watts per chan. at 8 ohms. I plan to get a lower powered amp for these speakers. I replaced it with a 100-watt per channel Pioneer receiver. I did not replace the speakers which were rated at 6-watts each. Not a problem. You can hear when a speaker has had enough and I was very careful. My roommate was not so careful. He came home from class, turned on the stereo, the display lights all came on but there was no sound so he turned up the volume knob. Still no sound so he kept on turning up the volume. The stereo never made a noise at all. The amp in the stereo does not kick in until 10-seconds after you power up. By then the volume knob was at full blast pumping 100-watts each into two little 6-watt speaker. POOF. No more speakers. Be careful out there.
