Members STRAT TOOL
Friend of mines cousin died a few years ago. He ended up with a few PA things. He's got a Crown CE 1000 with about three hours on it. Was this a decent amp? He told me I could have it for $30. I know this is robbery. I think it would make a good monitor amp or backup. Members soul-x
They have a poor reputation for reliability and I hear they're pretty difficult service. Not that it matters much at that price.
CMS Author Craig Vecchione Posted September 24, 2009 CMS Author Share Posted September 24, 2009 $30 is fair enough. They perform well enough, but are not the most reliable amps out there. I'd buy it and flip it, and get a Yamaha, Peavey or QSC with the money.
Members STRAT TOOL
well, I need dependable stuff. Perhaps I should save the $30 for a few cables or burritos or something worthwhile.

Perhaps I should save the $30 for a few cables or burritos or something worthwhile. You can turn it around and get a $150 or more for it. Then get a reliable used amp. Or a lot more cables and burritos.
Members soul-x
FWIW, the going rate for CE1000s is probably $150-200 Edit: I see Craig beat me to it
Members soundministries
With the issue of reliability, was this limited to the CE1000 or the entire CE line? Just curious as I've seen a couple of CE2000's pretty cheap in this area that I thought about snaggin.
Members soul-x
The 1000 and 2000 were the same design, with similar problems. The 4000 is completely different, I believe Class H. They are generally much better regarded.

Members soul-x
Crown's version of class D. Thanks for the clarification. I stand corrected.
Members TimmyP
IIRC, a lot of the CE problems were duo to internal screws that would cause big problems if they came even a teeny bit loose. Not a big deal to do a little preventative work there.

Actually, a lot of theor problems were due to their quirky design and unrepaiable nature. SMT emitter resistors glued down are a joke.
Members jimmymio
I admit I had one for awhile and had no problems with it. I just didn't like the way it sounded, especially on the top end. However for $30 it's a no-brainer even if only for a backup or, as others have suggested to resell/trade.JP
Members Jerry007
I bought 2 new Crown CE2000s around 6 years ago. I sold one to a friend about 3 years ago and it died shortly thereafter. Mine's running fine as part of our monitor rig. That's a 50% failure rate IME, so I guess the question is "Do you feel lucky?"
