Monitor and power amp queston.

Hey all,

I'm just wanting to check out if there is supposed to be a problem with running two monitors on one side of a power amp and only one monitor on the other. (obviously two would have the same mix)

 

The reason for the question is that our band is looking at running 5 monitors with two power amps. In order to have four mixes, two would need to be on one side of one of the power maps.

 

In the church band I've been playing in, we've had used a set up like this for years with no issue, but the volume levels we play at in the church are obviously lower than we would be in the other band.

Shouldn't be a problem... One side of the power amp would have a 4 ohm load.

When not bridged, modern stereo power amplifiers can be thought of and operated as two seperate amps. I've run 2 four ohm monitors (2 ohm load) on one side of my monitor amp and a single 8 ohm speaker on the other side for about 4 years.

Can I run one channel of my Crown amplifier at a different impedance than the other channel?

Yes. All dual channel Crown amplifiers can be treated as if they are two separate "mono" amplifiers (One channel completely independent of the other)

The power amps are owned by my bandmates, 3 by one guy and 1 by another, so they wanted to be sure it was OK, before we did it.

I had 6 monitors on two amps with one per side on three channels and three on the remaining channel and besides having to prop the amp rack up so it wouldn't fall over from the imbalanced load it worked fine.
