Members Hookani
Hi all, A beginners question. Like the title says, is 40' too long for an unbalanced instrument cable? If so, what could you do if you had to go that distance, didn't have a DI and you had to go to a 1/4" input. This wouldn't be for a pro gig or anything like that but just a fun jam so no real complaints of signal loss would be expected. Members RoadRanger
Yes, that's kinda far - I'd try it anyways if I wasn't concerned about signal loss and noise pickup. If your instrument isn't "active" you could used two 20' cords and some sort of stomp box in the middle that buffers the signal (ie isn't bypassed). Members whataracket
Very few people these days would use one that long. However, there have been artists in the past, before wireless, that used 50 feet or even 100 feet for a guitar cord. You won't hurt anything. The main issue is loss of high frequencies, and the potential for increase in hum if the shielding isn't good.
Members agedhorse
If you use a short cable to a stomp box, or buffer pedal, that might work ok. You can't bypass the stonp box though, it must remain active.
Members gruvjack
I know that you're a beginner and all but here's a thought: At that length/distance, why not go wireless? V.
Members Hookani
Thanks guys. I'll just give it a try since like you said it won't hurt anything other than some possible signal loss and noise. The situation is not worth investing a lot into since it's just for fun and only once in a great while that I would need that long of a run.
